The annual Surry Nuclear Power Emergency Exercise in underway today. They are currently using TG 1186,1174 and 1179 on the JC/YC/Wmbg system.

The Williamsburg Amateur Radio Repeater (146.76 MHz) is also being used.

On the 75 meter phone band, 3.947 MHz is being used to coordinate the local EOC with the Virginia EOC in Richmond.

I'm sure there are more TG's and frequencies being used.

Here is the news release:

"Response agencies and local government representatives will role-play their emergency operations functions from the state and local government emergency operations centers. Participating localities include the counties of Charles City, Isle of Wight, James City, New Kent, Surry, York and the cities of Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson and Williamsburg.

Law enforcement personnel will practice traffic control measures in the field. Local and state radiological monitoring teams will take simulated field readings and communicate via radio."

Should be interesting to see if STARS is used. From previous post, I understand they have problems in Surry County.

STARS is on Operations 1 (DEM 2407), but only heard them check in about an hour or so ago. Hampton tower is what I heard the check in on and I've had a 96 on hold on the talkgroup with 2096 scanning normal.

The Williamsburg Amateur Repeater (146.76 MHz) is being used to coordinate all the EOC's in the area with the Virginia EOC in Richmond. They are broadcasting the simulated emergency messages. The messages are very interesting....but somewhat disturbing when you realize that this could actually happen.

As stated in the news release, the various local agencies are taking simulated radiological readings in the area. You can hear them on the talkgroups I mentioned in the first post

Surry Drill- from inside the control room

He all, I was in the Surry Sumulator from 0715-13:15 play as a control room engineering, interersting drill. Fuel damage and we broke containment. No sprays to the reactor, and no sprays to containment. Containment went to 45 psia and Rads inside containment were 200+ R/hr, very nasty stuff going out side from containment. By the way, I was making all the EPIP call - so the initiate ALERT classification (fuel damage) , that was me.

I'll bet that gets your blood pumping even though you know its a simulation!

Many years ago my bro-in-law was a reactor operator there. He moved to N-Anna when it opened. When he left the power company he was the only one licensed to operate both plants. He's now an IT tech with one of the county school systems. Much safer and no shift work!
