I have been a member for about a month now and got to say I love this place such a huge place to learn things about just about anything..Ok enough of rambling...I have 4 security cameras at my dad's place and im looking to make them digital so he can view the cameras while he is at work.I build computers and repair them very often but this is a whole different area for me.I have video capture cards on there way so i can capture the video .The question is does anybody know of any good monitoring abd broadcasting software where i can have a webserver on my router broadcast the signals from the various cameras to a port where he can connect to them.I have looked at various different software programs but most of them you have to pay for and not really into purchasing hundreds of dollars of software just to experiment with them..If anybody has any suggestions i would love to hear them..Again thanks again for such a great website

If they are analog cameras the cheapest way would be to just get a 4 ch digital video surveillance recorder (About $250 but less depending on size of hard drive) It will have both a ethernet output and NTSC and VGA outputs. One example would be Digimerge DH200 series. I just bought several without hard drives for $170 ea . I think they were cheaper because newer models came out. You can access the video over the net from any computer web browser or locally too.

It actually runs Linux and is powered a 12VDC wall wart or any other 12VDC source.

Well thats just the thing. They are digital cameras so...Would prefer to run them on a computer system because there are far more capabilities that a computer can do than just a stand alone dvr system. Most of the dvr systems i have looked at dont do much more than the cameras themselves.I prefer to have a system that is gonna have more than one purpose. So if i can find a good piece of software that will work then ill be set.As stated in the first post have already a working system with video capture cards and everything else setup.Just need some suggestions on a good surveillance software that will do everything i need.Biggest thing is motion detection and the capability of monitoring 6 to 8 channels of cameras and also have the capability to stream over the net.
