I just want to share with those concered that as the rain progresses here in Southern Alberta tonight, information about river levels can be heard on the major local repeaters including High River's VE6HRB (145.1700) and Calgary's VA6CTV (145.2900) as operators are giving reports every half hour or hour tonight; also of course keep tuned to those public safety frequencies.

For those outside of this area who would like to know what I'm talking about, here is the news story:

Flood watches in effect for Southern Alberta

CFCN.ca POSTED AT 6:01 PM Monday, June 6

Alberta Environment has issued a Flood Watch for a number of streams and rivers in Southern Alberta including Fish Creek in Calgary.
Officials in Okotoks, Turner Valley, and Black Diamond are keeping a close eye on the Sheep River.
All the lower pathways have been closed and the river is very high.
People living and visiting the area are being warned to use extreme caution around riverbanks.
More rain is expected overnight and a Heavy Rainfall Warning has been issued for Southwestern Alberta including Calgary.
The Highwood river is also extremely high.
For specific information on the current flood watches, click on the link above.
In addition, the Calgary Fire Department is issuing a caution about the Elbow River.
The river is running fast and officials say additional rain in the forecast is a concern.
A number of pathways are closed and people are advised to avoid the riverbanks.

Absolutely nutty week. As a member of Redwood Meadows Emergency Services, I worked almost non-stop from 9am Tuesday to 3am Thursday, with a few hours of sleep interspersed in between.

Normal call volume for us in a 3 day period is 1 or 2 responses. From 9am Tuesday to 3am Thursday, we did 27 calls. Most of them were flooding complaints - everything from "I have an inch of water in my basement" to "the protective berm around town is crumbling"   - but there were several other calls in the midst of all this, including a double-fatal motor vehicle accident on Highway 66 in Kananaskis Country.

Details including stories, photo, and video are available on the department website at http://www.rmesfire.org/

Flooding: Here we go again...

A heavy rainfall warning for southern alberta has been issued today (Friday, June 17th) and public safety agencies as well as radio amateurs are monitoring river levels. Emergency Operations Centers have also been set up just as they were last week.

These activities can be heard once again on the repeaters I have previously mentioned above. The emergency net that has been established will continue through the night as the rain progresses; as I speak, the rain is comming down pretty good here, and flooding to some homes has occured by Three Point Creek near Millarville; several roads in the surrounding area have been closed down also. Boy oh boy, those poor flood victims from last week, and now more rain, sheesh, what can I say.

Drivers and Laughing

I don't even want to start on the mentality of the drivers in Alberta. Maybe we will be lucky and all the bad drivers will kill each other off .. but then again, will there be anyone left ?

I don't know but this is being made out to be some sort of real emergency.... Maybe it is cause this place is in such bad shape that we here in the capital don't really care about southern ab anymore.

Thanks Ralph for making us resentful and envious of the south.

Buh wha?

The government has something to do with the fact that all the water on the mountain is coming through my neighbor's basement as it makes its way to the creek?

Or that it has rained 37 days in the past month (or so it seems)?

One observation I can make about you Edmontonians is you sure seem to be wrapped up in politics a lot...

How's this..

STAR-1 is being used to locate and retrieve civilians in the Okotoks area cut off from 'dry land' by flood waters. (406.5375, ctcss 85.4)

Day is about to break here... I'm going out to survey what this part of the world looks like... probably the same as last week, if not worse, from the sounds of it.

Power has been off and on all night in the Bragg Creek area. Apparently still off in Redwood Meadows.

Yeah, I heard, and it sounds like Alpine also pitched in with one of their helicopters as well. Also, all this rain has made a leak in my roof show itself recently :x so we've gotta tend to that sometime soon.

Going to go out later to see what Fish Creek looks like again, might take, and send some photos to family and friends in Europe who saw the creek in its usual form when they were here last.

Here is one of the photos I took today looking at the parking lot in front of the Green Gate Garden Center just south of Fish Creek here in southwest Calgary, no exit indeed!
