There's an interesting post on SWLing.com that compares the performance of the old Sony ICF SW77, SW55 and the newer Tecsun PL-310ET here...

Sony ICF-SW77: recent DX & comparing performance with the ICF-SW55 & Tecsun PL-310ET | The SWLing Post

The antenna used was a Wellbrook loop, apparently

For those that might not be familiar, the Radio Verdad station in Guatemala that is mentioned in the article is a tough low power catch- not a bad DX catch at all.

I'd recommend bookmarking this site as it has interesting articles like this one from time to time. It's worth an occasional look

The Sonys in question look like direct competitors to the 909/909X. I wonder how they sold?

I had a ICF-SW77, it was a very good portable. Not as good as my Eton E1 but among the best portables in my 45+ years of SWL'ing and they sold well as I recall. DXing.com gives it 5 stars. Not sure about the SW55, I never had one but DX'ing.com gives it 4 stars.
