I was loading my SDS 100 larger battery into my radio and discovered that the battery metal on the back looked as if the battery expanded. The bottom of the battery changed in shape. This was not significant, but noticeable. Has anyone experience this using a larger battery?

Yes. Only mine was huge and scary looking. The whole plastic case was opened up. Thank goodness I still had the original small battery.

I Have A Swollen Battery, What Now?

What a joke. This is the only thing I hate about this radio, the damn battery. Furthermore, I don't know why Uniden did not vent the battery door. If I was a guessing man, I would have to do with making the radio water-resistant.

I never ever charge this in the radio. I use an external battery charger. I am incensed about this piece of crap battery since it is not very old.

I've charged nightly in the scanner since I purchased it June 2018, and the received the large battery 3-4 months later, no swelling/expanding also charged in the scanner every night. Could this be a certain lot of chargers I often wonder

I don't know. I bought the original large battery with the external charger. Later, when supplies went south, I bought the original battery and battery door. I sent one of the chargers back. They refunded me. So, I ordered another one. This time, I bought the original, larger battery and charger.

The problem I have had with the external chargers has been the latching mechanism. My original locks the battery and the pilot light comes on. The other one does not latch. Another battery charger latched but the pilot light kept going out.

So, here are two shots of the warped battery. Help me out. Does this battery show signs of overheating? Or, is it possible that a drop might have caused the problem. I have dropped this radio several times, but not that many when compared with the 436HP.

Maybe if you didn’t run the thing 24/7/365.25… lol;)

I kid.

I really don't run it that much. Hell, I have even turned it off during Church. A pastor, who loved scanners once asked me what I was carrying in my hand. I told him it was a scanner and if he started to bore me I would turn it on. We had a good chuckle. I have three good batteries, two large and one small.

Here is what is weird. The battery charges and works well. I don't want my pants to set on fire if I carry this battery as a spare.

Well...I have no idea why you have scanner problems  . You might want to resolve your fumbling problem.

Generally speaking, left-handed folks are prone to mishaps. My fumbling problem began when I popped out of the womb. My better half removes drinking glasses and other objects when we go out to eat. She learned, I am very clumsy.

I am just trying to determine if the distortion is from dropping or swelling. I have never seen a swollen SDS 100 battery for comparison

It seems that many that are having this issue have been using the external charger. The other thing noticed, is they are fully charged and are set aside for a period of time and start expanding.

Well, I will be switched. This is why I am asking. So, I will explore other methods of charging this puppy. I bought an external charger to keep one fresh when the other was charging. I don't want these damn batteries tp set my junk on fire.

So, if I started to charge these batteries inside my radio, how do I know when it is fully charged? I do better with a pilot light than reading voltage.

When the charge light turns green. I keep a car charger in my glove compartment, and set it to charge while on.

If it's been dropped that many times, I'd assume the speaker might be cracked if it sounds that bad.

When I looked for a car charger, they were out. The SDS 100 package had one for the wall. I need to order this one. I have never charged while scanning. I have a 12-volt power supply that I could use as well. Does anyone know who might have a DC power supply for this radio?

You need a cigarette lighter plug with at least 2.0 volts, and use the supplied charger/programming cable. I purchased a second cable and use it in the car only.

Is this the one with the choke-thing on it? It is not a straight cord, right?

Choke thing? It's the one where you can plug the USB part of the charging cord into it. You have to set the scanner to Charge while On under the battery options tab.

Yes, that is it. Do you see that round larger piece close to the micro USB? That is what I am calling a choke. I don't know what it does or what it is called. I am going to mark this cord with bright paint. Yes, that is it. I have one from my 436HP. Thanks.
