Got a question about SFD freq. I've noticed that the repeater 153.95 doesn't seem to have tone-outs when calls are dispatched. Is that true or am I just missing them? How are the depts. "alerted"? I know they're paid but are there any volunteer staff? What gets their attention when they have a call? Also it seems quite often that I only hear dispatch acknowledging unit transmissions even while the repeater carrier is still open. What's the deal on this...anyone? Thanks.

Yes Syracuse is all paid professional staff. In most cases the stations are not alrerted, though some of the less busy stations are alerted with tones. Keep listening, and no you are not missing anythign. It will intersting to see how station and volunteers are alerted with the new radio system with is supposed to be finished this fall.

Thanks for the info. So when a call goes out they just announce it and hope everyone heard it? That seems kind of wierd. And what about the seemingly one-sided transmissions on the repeater? Do you know what I'm talking about there? If the carrier is still open I would have to believe that both ends would be heard. Have you noticed this?

Yeah I have to, It has to do with the way the system is set up, with the wireline and voters and how the hangtimes are set in the different systems. Notice how the dispatchers always hear the communication? You have to remember too you are hearing the output carrier, there is a seperate input carrier and a squelch circuit operated by PL tone, not by carrier presence. Even though the output carrier may be up, there are things going on in the backend that the listener is not aware of.

Of course once the new system is in place, the trunk system will operate more normally.

So unlike "normal" repeaters I have to have the input as well? I do get the units comms sometimes but not all. I obviously don't know a whole bunch about the technical details on how that sytem is suppose to operate but if you or anyone else could possibly explain I guess that would help. Thanks Studge!

One thing that I have noticed is that on the EDACS system, there is some sort of data transmitted ofter the Syracuse FD talkgroup (02-121) before a dispatch takes place. I don't know for sure but I have thought that this might be part of a station alerting system.
