Today I programmed the system into my 396T and I finally got an ID other than Los Angeles Utility. So it is definately this system: http://www.radioreference.com/modules.php?name=TRSDB&sid=3958

I heard a lot of activity today too.
It starts at 8:45am with radio checks being done on TG 400. "Guardian-J6" called "Knight-16" (could be Night), "Liberty-16", "L-06" (El Zero Six), "Myers-6", "Eagle-06" and what sounded like "Sector-06".

8:52 All stations are requested to stand by.
8:56 "Standy by for the Commanding General"
Then a slew of people respond with their callsign and "Roger, out". They were "L-06", "Rock-06" (probably ROC actually), "TOC-06", "Knight-06" and "Liberty-06".

The CG then comes on and explains the purpose of this test, an alternate means of getting in touch with all these units. He mentioned something about DEFCON "C" too. Then comms drop, but the TG was still active.

"Hill-06" and "Detrick-06" then explain to "Guardian-J6" that they didn't hear all of what the CG said. J6 said it was probably because the CG was transmitting for more than 30 seconds without a break. J6 explains that the CG was telling them that the exercise had been terminated.

I imagine all these "6" suffix refer to the S6 shops at each location and of course Guardian-J6 would be the J6.

9:13am TG330 Hear "Myers 474"

9:37am TG851 encrypted

11:45am TG306 "Test, 1, 2. Test, 1, 2."

Later TG 852 came up encrypted.

The last TG I found today was 485. Some guy named "Sgt Jackson" was talking to "Operations". There was discussion about vehicles inspections and then a while later, there being only 8 vehicles left in the parking lot. A mention of "Myers" too.

Traditionally Army Callsigns suffixed with the 6 are unit Commanders. Not to be confused with the S6/G6/J6 comms shop . By the way featured prominently on the Joint Force Headquarters, National Capitol Region webpage http://www.jfhqncr.northcom.mil/ - the "Guardians" Motto

I too heard TG 485 about 1:30 or a little after today. I heard someone talking about something (caught the tail end of it) and then someone else said "Not over the radio!". I heard nothing after that.

the whole G'vot was involved in a voluntary COOP that was an exercise of the event of an emergency scenario. FAA did not participate. USGS' scenario was a weapon of mass destruction was released (or whatever they called it) in Clinton, MD and all facilities were evacuated within 30miles. maybe what you heard was the facilities participating in this.

Talkgroups noted on this sytem:

2 Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. Sounds like police. Units ID as "Sherlock, Sherlock Gate, 360, 1-1, 1-3, Unit-9, Unit-6. Locations mentioned are 16th St, a motorpool, deputy commander's parking spot, Buildings 7 and 11"

5 Fire Dept (unidentified, likely Walter Reed based on TGID)
100 Ft Belvoir FD
102 unknown -probably Ft Belvoir PD
115 Radio Techs
126 Missed hearing the comms on this system, but on 001-0101 it was a patch of Fairfax Co TG 16848 - Mt Vernon dispatch
133 Encrypted
136 Encrypted
201 Pentagon Force Protection Service
258 unknown
271 unknown- reference to elevator
306 unknown, but heard as "Fire Ops-1" on the 00D-0101 system, likely Ft. Myer FD.
330 Unit-3 to Myer on 'Roam-1' - radio check from Fairfax City
400 Joint National Capital Region HQ command (how I would describe based on previous comms)
418 Army bus convoy to FEMA/MD ANG site on Riggs Rd on 12/6/06
439 unknown- likely Army
473 Army bus convoy to FEMA/MD ANG site on Riggs Rd on 12/6/06
474 Army bus convoy to FEMA/MD ANG site on Riggs Rd on 12/6/06
485 "Operations" -probably for JNCR HQ
851 unknown
852 unknown
900 unknown

Today had been the first time hearing TG 2 on any system. It has been quite active too.

I would say this is pretty good confirmation that this site is indeed located in Tysons Corner.
http://coldwar-c4i.net/Site_E/index.html
That and the signal being so strong. It also seems like the 001-1010 may be co-located.

I came across this site while looking up Andrews AFB units to better sort talkgroups on the 400mhz system. The site is giving me some ideas on other possible transmitter locations.

I bet some of this stuff still applies.

if we don't hear from/see you for a while we'll know who has you. ;-)

if Raven Rock is "Site R" and Tyson's is "Site E", where are the rest?

I think someone else posted that main site on a thread I started on the Tavern forum about old military facilities. :)

On Saturday I worked my way up to Raven Rock to see what I could hear. Then I headed east and south through Maryland. I have a good idea where I will be heading next. I'm plotting known TX locations as well as other sites that may be. All the old sites are located at all the highest points in the area, topography hasn't changed in the last 50 years so why change transmitter locations.

I think there are still a few sites yet to come on line. From MD Rt97 at I-70 (8 miles from Site-D Mt Airy, 7 miles from Liberty Dam) I was receiving 385.775 with five bars but it showed no indication of being a control channel. But when I listened to it with CC mode off it sounded just like a control channel.

For now I'm plotting locations with Google Earth.

a quick Google, gave this for Raven Rock

if this is really what's there, it kinda makes sense and makes more sense that this system can be received on Mt. Weather.
In 1964 one of the Tabloid magazines "blew the cover" of Site R. Before that nobody could talk about it - now you can find several Google Earth "I" markers on it.

When I drove past there (Pre 9/11) it looked "unoccupied".

About all I'm willing to say about it is - think about Cheyenne Mountain but on a smaller scale.

something interesting I noticed on the way home... if you are going west on Rt7, as you approach the cross-over for going up to the FEMA installation on the left, look to your right. take note of the street sign. the street is named "Raven Rocks". that road goes kind of north-east toward the general direction of Raven Rock AKA "Site-R". coincidental or did someone know something and did it on purpose?

Since the road ends a few miles from Rte 7, there probably is/was something known locally as Raven Rocks (notice the plural).

By the way, I remember Tysons Corners as a country crossroads and 7 Corners as a traffic circle.

agreed BUT, you have to wonder when they went from route numbers to names for 911, didn't people that lived on roads with route number have a say in what the road was named? if that was so,it could have been someone that knew more then most and thought it was funny. just thought it was a little odd even though it was plural. :)
