I was using a Compaq Deskpro with Windows 2000 Pro with no problems. I recently moved that computer to a MAME cabinet, so I dug out a 450 MHz AMD motherboard to use as my "radio" PC. Well, niether one of my applications are seeing the data stream from the scanners disc tap. I am using a Pro-2006 with a tap going to the sound card. The sound card is an onboard type. In the volume control, if I unmute the "Line In" control, I hear the data through the PC speakers, but I'm not getting a wave form of any type. I saw something about AMD computers not being able to work with T4WIN. Is this true, and is there anything else I can look at?

Thanks

A real popular chipset for onboard audio was the AD1816. T4win will not work with this sound card. I have a HP Kayak with it on board, and an external Acer FX3D. Both will not decode. That might be something to look into.

Oh ya, I run an AMD K6-2 550 with T4win and it works just fine.

So if I throw a Creative Labs sound card in, will it work then, or does it have something to do with the motherboard itself?

The motherboard should have nothing to do with it.

I would actually disable the onboard audio, and put in a PCI sound blaster live (they work great). This is much easier to do than changing the whole motherboard. Actually I think any Creative Labs card will work with T4Win. I did this with my HP Kayak, and have never had a problem since.

LOL, I don't know why they called my computer system a "Kayak"!! The damn thing weighs a ton too. I'm sure if I threw it in the river it wouldn't float.

There are some crappy audio drivers out there. If you are having problems with the on-board audio ...

1. look for new updated drivers.
2. as suggested, disable the on-board and get a ISA or PCI soundcard.

The Windows drivers for the Sound Blaster(s) (like SB16, SB32, AWE64, etc.) are very solid.

Note: if you are running older hardware, you don't have to buy a brand new made-for-Windows XP sound system. Look for something older in the discount bin or at a garage sale.

As for AMD vs. Intel processors with T4Win ... T4Win was written using an AMD proc.

Have you tried using the Windows sound recorder utility, sndrec32.exe?

Start it from the Start | Run dialog box. When its dialog appears, press the record button. Instead of pressing Start in t4win.

If you don't see a waveform and can not play back the sound, this will rule out a problem with t4win because two independently-written programs have problems using your audio hardware.

Just tried the sound recorder and it's still a no-go. I haven't been able to find a sound card yet, I may have to go to the store to get one. Thanks for all of the help.

Before giving money for another card, I would do two more things:

1) Look for driver updates as rfmobile suggested. Visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and follow the instructions. After it finds updates for your system, it asks which ones you want to install. Look for drivers in the third section of available updates (called "optional hardware updates").

2) Somehow verify the tap did not fail simultaneously. For example plugging it into another computer and try sndrec32, plugging it into a conventional tape recorder (playback volume should be strong), putting a voltmeter (my radio puts out about 1.5 VDC) across the connector that goes into the computer (verifies the cable as well), etc.

The tap seems to be fine because I can hear data over the PC speakers. I have the latest drivers for the onboard sound card. I'll check the voltage when I get home tonight.

Is there any recommendations for the soundcard to use with T4? I've now found one integrated soundcard which works decently with T4, two laptops and some noname-PCI-soundcards refuse to decode anything.

Another thing ... which I think is covered in the FAQ ... is to make sure the place on your computer where you've plugged in the cable with discrimator audio is in fact the input you've selected from T4Win.

Most computers have a line input and a microphone input. Some modems also have an auxiliary input (for hold music I suppose). T4Win will try to list all of the possible audio inputs. If the first one does not work, try one of the others in "mono" mode. You might be suprised.

Finally, some microphone inputs have a gain option. For some it's variable, others (like mine) it's a +20db gain on or off. You'll have to dive into the control panel settings for you audio devices to get to these. I can't give more details here because the specifics vary with every device driver.
