I had heard something about this previously, but how often is TAC 5 used for ambulance to ER communication? There must've been a fairly substantial accident in Roanoke today because they were using TAC 5 to call vitals to the ER.

There are actually 2 different Fire/Rescue TAC 5s. One for the County and a different one for the City. They are different talkgroup IDs but they are used for the same function.
They are used to call the hospital (usually Carilion MEDCOM) and give patient status. In reality, they aren't used all that often. Most normal patient reports are made by cell phone for reasons on patient privacy. About the only time the TAC channel is used is when they have multiple patients, long extrications, or a trauma alert. It is sometimes also used when the cellphone isn't working :wink:
In the City the TAC channels are used as follows:
TAC-1/ Main Dispatch
TAC-2 responses of less than 4 pieces of equipment/medical
TAC-3 fire responses
TAC-4 backup to TAC-3 if more than one incident at a time
TAC-5 MEDCOM
TAC-6 Medical standbys
TAC-7 Airport equipment in the operations area
TAC-8 Mutual Aid (primary)
TAC-9 Mutual Aid (secondary)
TAC-11 operations (administrative traffic)
TAC-16 direct simplex (non-trunked)
