Talk Group Question

Brand new here, so please forgive my ignorance. While listening to police bands i hear them refer to 'switching to talk group 2" what exactly does that mean?

Talkgroups are the "channels" used by a trunked radio system. Trunked systems are organized as, for example:

I. System Name

A. Transmitter Tower Site #1 Frequencies
B. Transmitter Tower Site #2 Frequencies
C. Transmitter Tower Site #3 Frequencies
D. Transmitter Tower Site #4 Frequencies

(1) Groups- Agencies and Depts. that use this system

(a) State Hwy. Patrol
1. Talkgroup #1 (Actual TG # would be something like "04-040)
2. Talkgroup #2 (Actual TG # would be something like "04-041)
3. Talkgroup #3 (Actual TG # would be something like "04-042)
..... for forth and so on..... for all the Talkgroups under the State Hwy. Patrol Group

(b) Smithtown Police Dept.
1. Talkgroup #1 (Actual TG # would be something like "05-040)
2. Talkgroup #2 (Actual TG # would be something like "05-041)
3. Talkgroup #3 (Actual TG # would be something like "05-042)
..... for forth and so on..... for all the Talkgroups under the SMithtown PD Group

Some of the explanations will be a bit confusing to you but think of a talk group
as a "virtual channel" that can randomly wind up on almost any of the trunk system
frequencies. This virtual channel has the same purpose as a real channel but since
they are virtual you can have a lot more than real channels. I hope that clears it up
for you.....
