Hello there. This is Coolguy. I have some questions that I would like answered. If anyone can answer them. I am from Chapleau.

1st: For the MNR TALKGROUPS: 2784, 2768 & 2771. Would anyone happen to know what the callsign or TALKGROUP NAME for it would be for around here in the Chapleau area or the Algoma area. Like for the OPP here in the Algoma area it is: 3OPS25.

2nd: Would anyone happen to know what Callsign or TALKGROUP NAME and Talkgroup is used in the Wawa, Timmins, Sault & Sudbury areas.

The reason why I am asking, is so I can Alpha Tag it with that so everytime they come on, I will know what TALKGROUP NAME they are on. I would really appreciate it.

I will be waiting for any replies to this E-mail. Thanks.

Coolguy.

Well, I can tell you from the start that 2771 isn't a valid talkgroup. You've been bitten by the (in)famous status bit bug...search the Eastern Canada forum for "status bit" and you'll be on the right track.

OK, I'll bite - what the heck is that mess? Those are supposed to be talkgroups?
Must be a *lot* of stuff you can't listen to, what with all that encryption goin' on...

Can an MTrunker user explain this? I don't use it, but I'm damn curious.

I'd guess that the columns are messed up or he's posted a file showing radio IDs. Here's the first line from my 782dgrp.txt file, Andy...you should be able to make sense of it.

0010,7,0,"BMR Digital 1",4524192d,492,4,16, 16,10/04/2006,16:30

There ain't that many encrypted talkgroups on Fleetnet Zone 1...

Yup, major mess.

With that many bogus tg's, the whole list should be considered worthless.

I'd say it's noise on the control channel or something not quite setup right with trunker.

I ran good ole DOS trunker for a week this summer when the OPP were switching over and I didn't come up with more then a handful of tg's.

Most were confirmed by *listening* to my scanner and the others had counterparts in the other Zones.

BMR seems to be duplicating the common talkgroups on each system. The talkgroup assigned to 1TAC01 is the same as 2TAC01 and 3TAC01 and probably 4TAC01 when it's rolled out.

However, please don't take the list of Zone 1 talkgroups, convert them to Zone 3 talkgroups by changing the 1 to a 3 and submit them to the database.

Somebody has already done that and the submission has been marked as worked and deleted. There are some major changes between Zone 1 and Zone 3 and this trick doesn't work for all talkgroups.

Im sorry the list is mucked up...I ran Mtrunker32 for many weeks , and Mtrunker showed the TG's...I have also seen these on my scanner as well.

As you know , Zone 3 is still very new , and alot of those TG had no voice...or just a lil " testing " by Spectrum Group Radio Techs...My guess is that they might be future use , but by no means did I mean to imply they are all in use...Im sorry for any confusion.

I did not submit any of those either as I did not confirm them as Mike stated ( by listening ) , however I will over time.

Zone 3 is a vast zone...units can be heard a as far as 200 km's away ..sometimes more.

Again my guess is radio techs testing as I have heard on a few of those by the techs , asking Northbay " testing 1 2 3 ..copy " ?

Most of those TG's only appeared once...

Tho MNR has 3 TG's now in Sudbury in use now...and a new MTO.

Ill re confim the MNR / MTO as submit for approval.

Sorry once again , if I caused any confusion.

Are you taking this data out of the 782dgrp.txt file? The fact is, all talkgroups stored in that file should be the base talkgroup number (ie. no odd numbers...talkgroups before a status bit is added to it) so I'm not sure where you're getting those numbers from.

That's what I always thought. So I guess a good question would be - what does williams63's grp file really look like?

There you go...that we can work with.

From the info from your grp file a lot of those have only logged affiliations and not any actual usage. As far as I understand the trunker variants the talkgroups will be logged to the grp file once a radio affiliates to the talkgroup but the radio need not key up on the talkgroup. Thus, you get a lot of talkgroups that are 'identified' by trunker but haven't had any usage as far as voice traffic is concerned.

I suggest you check the database...some kind soul has already sussed out a few of those talkgroups such as 8528 (North Bay) and you'll be saving yourself some work. Other than that, you'll probably have to wait for the other users to come online. I think the Zone 2 and 3 talkgroups follow roughly the same ranges as Zone 1 so you probably assume the 2000s are MTO Enforcement, the 8000s are OPP OPS talkgroups and so on and so forth.

This would be your clue. I have run Trunker for a long time and rarely
see a bad TG or channel pop up. When one does, it is logged for a very
small number of hits, which makes it suspect, and should be checked out
before even thinking of making a submission. I believe the admins would
stand behind that (confirming by hearing anything that's submitted).

Even scanners are not immune to falsing. There have been numerous
reports over time of "new" TGs showing up which are usually false decoding
due to bad signal. Going back to 1st-generation trunktrackers like the BC235,
"funny" TGs show up but they are usually easy to spot (odd sub-fleet
numbers etc.). Software utilities that log hits from a scanner are also
vulnerable; they seem to grab short bursts of invalid decoding, ones that
most humans would normally ignore.

Update: the most recent list looks better. The TGs are recognizable. Doesn't
explain the where the first one came from though.

Well that's what happens when you run a junky program like Trunker :) I used to get false hits ALL the time with Trunker. I use TRUNK88 now, and have never had a single false positive. From my place in Toronto, with nothing more than a J-Pole antenna, I can run TRUNK88 on Fleetnet sites as far away as Woodstock (London on a REALLY good day), with almost 100% decode rates. Trunker doesn't even recognize a control channel.

Trunker works fine for me. Can't say I've ever seen a false talkgroup show up.

I'm using an Optotrakker with the data slicer mod and I can pull in stuff from pretty far away.

Really depends on the quality of your slicer and the levels you are feeding it with.

Junk in = Junk Out.

I'd give Trunk88 a try but I don't want to lose the 8,000 id's I've collected for Fleetnet.

Anybody know of a good conversion program?

False hits are very rare for me, and can be traced to overload in my receiver
(mixing from a very strong local site popping in on a weaker site in spite of
the front-end filter added). Of course, this wouldn't happen if I was running a
"real" radio right Mikey?

I like TRUNK88 because it runs on computers with low horsepower e.g.
old 386/486 laptops that Trunker would just choke....but that doesn't make
Trunker "junk".

Well, I'm less than 10km, direct line of sight, with the Toronto fleetnet tower. It's running off of a CDM1250 radio, with a data slicer who's output is darn near 100% noise free. I'd say that's pretty good :)

There's already a conversion program to convert Trunker to TRUNK88 files, and vice versa. I used to to transfer over all my old trunker records to T88 format.

No, what makes Trunker junk is that it is very susceptible to false positives. It will report an OSW the first time it's heard, instead of needing to see it several times, as is the case with TRUNK88. What this translates into is that Trunker is much more likely to get falsed than T88 is. Not saying it's going to happen all the time, but the door is wide open.

Also, with Trunker, if it misses a chunk of data, it'll start bunching partial OSW's together in an attempt to reconstruct what it thinks are valid OSW's, when in actuality this just leads to BS data. I've logged dozens of Radio ID's in the form of Talkgroups while running Trunker.

And Dave, using a "real" radio doesn't really have much to do with it. Sure, it helps, because intermod is totally non exsistant, but what's REALLY important is having a good quality slicer, and building in a low-pass filter to help get rid of all the junk in the signal...My old PRO-42 scanner with a good slicer works lightyears better than my CDM1250 with a crappy slicer.

Tg

The TG's MTrunker32 found , were Key ups...no voice.

Rarely did I hear voice...I would watch the radio affiliate to the tg's.

Ill try a diff trunker program..and see.

Zone 3 is still new...and alot of testing goes on..even MOH has been testing.

The number of TG could be attributed to techs scrolling though the folders on the radio.

** shrugs ** but Ill try a new prog..tho I do not have a slicker , only a tap on a Pro 97.

Andy can correct me if I'm wrong but Trunk88 likely isn't going to give you much more information in regards to talkgroups. Trunker is doing its job as programmed: logging the RIDs and GIDs (and patches and so forth) when they are detected...so I'm not sure what another control channel decoder will help you with...

Identifying talkgroups is still a matter of listening...and luckily the OPP and MOH are fairly structured in their callsigns and it is *reasonably* easy to sort out...just time consuming.
