So I was on Ebay and just bought a TH5 talking house am transmitter and was wondering if you guys would know how much range it typical gets in the suburb environment? as well would i be able to construct a longwire antenna for it with speaker wire?

From what I've read on the TH5, it should get between 300 to 3000 feet depending on terrain.

Speaker wire would work, but you would probably get better results building a longwire out of 14 gauge copper wire. To be resonant in the 1700 kHz range it would need to be pretty long. Using the formula of 2808 / f = L that would be 137 feet long.

IMHO you shouldn't go extending the antenna - don't they have a special dispensation from the FCC to operate and if you extend the range by adding a bigger antenna, the men in trench coats and dark glasses are liable to turn up and take you away.......

just curious-what's your plan with this thing that you'd want to transmit further than your home?

If you've got someone like ridgescan on your tail ... he could probably hear you a couple miles away. Probably block at the most on a car radio.

hmm other than the antenna I might see if i can get or make a linear for this, you think it would be possible to use this on carrier current?

No matter what you try... you'll most likely not be happy with the results. May I suggest you try an Internet live stream. Maybe something like Winamp software and Shoutcast? Your range would be "anywhere in the world" and you'll have many more listeners if you promote it. It's legal and your only enemies will be the mp3 licensing police if you play music...

you think i could make due with 12 gauge? I found a whole big spool of it for a good deal.

http://www.fmdxantenna.com/proddetail.php?prod=14tun#.UTCfNBpZ61F i've used a coax as little as 5ft for in home also old rabbit ears.i even used a 20-176 antenna from rat shack before(yes I know its not designed for that) for a FEW MINUTES because I dont know about feedback into a transmitter.(I'm not tech enough yet to know all the in's & out's)if one of the tech gurus on here says its ok I would spend the $30 on the rat shack antenna.just keep it low to the ground.remember, the higher the antenna the farther your signal will go.

Very nice, it finally arrived in the mail today. Tested it out and it seems pretty nice, much stronger signal than I get with my 500mw FM transmitter, haven't really went out with the pocket radio and tested the range yet. I think I'll hold of modding it for now as I'm pretty satisfied with the 10 feet longwire it comes with plus its pretty nice so i dont want to accidentally mess it up, in a few months or so I'll see if i can get the ATU unit for it or get a linear amp put together i can plug the coax output into, maybe mod one from a 160m HAM radio.
