I was monitoring the TDOT HELP repeater today, and one of the units told dispatch that he was going to Nextel for the next few minutes... Soo I guess for some comms they are running Nextels.

I think they use Nextel for some truck to truck comms. I have to hand it to TDOT on the implementation of the help crews in Nashville. I listen to them 5 days a week. They are usually the very first on the scene and help keep traffic moving by getting break downs, fender benders and the such out of the way so traffic can resume flow. The use of the camera system allows them to dispatch a call usually before the call comes in that there is a problem. Good job TDOT, and the to the crews that help keep things running as smooth as possible, thank you.

If memory serves me correctly, the Help trucks are are dispatched by THP dispatch. I know for sure that THP dispatch has a nextel phone in it's center that the officers can call if for some reason the radios don't work. I would venture to guess that they either don't have hand-helds, or if they do they don't work real well, thus when the help truck guys are out of the truck they just use the nextel.

Umm HELP have ME's in some vehicles....

But they use the Nextel's for long range car to car, and to conduct TDOT business. I am also in the process of confirming usage of a LOT of the local TN State repeaters in usage here.. lots of traffic on the following...

453.8750
154.9650
And one federal freq....
164.9650

Each of the TDOT Help programs in the state have their own offices and dispatch centers. T.H.P. does not dispatch the Help Trucks.
