So just wondering if anyone here knows about this.

A few seasons back, in an episode of The Simpsons Homer puts someone on hold and starts singing "Wichita Lineman" and "Macarthur Park". I read somewhere that back in the 70s-80s at least one of those songs was a popular song for putting people on hold.

Can anyone confirm this?

Wichita Lineman was a really popular song back in the late 60's and early 70's, so very likely it was heavily used in MOH use. It was likely hacked well by the instrumental groups that did Muzak and other "elevator" type music.

Not quite the same thing, but I still have a dusty old cassette answering machine tape of the voice impersonations from famous movie stars.
I can't figure out how to get it to work on my cell phone tho....

Convert it to mp3 and upload yourself a ringtone... but wouldn't you rather have the hotline tone from Our Man Flint?
