I am testing again (2nd try) for my Tech ticket. My first attempt I missed 2 more than maximum and that was a little over a year ago. I have been taking the practice tests on QRZ nightly to keep the info fresh in my head. Any advice for remembering the formulas to figure current and such?

OHM"S law isn't too hard

To remember the formulas you HAVE to memorize ohms law...it's really simple. all you need to know are 3 easy equations. e= voltage, i = current or amps, r = resistance or ohms. now:

E= I * R------voltage = current divided by resistance
I = E / R------current = voltage divided by resistance
R = E / I ------resistance = voltage divided by current

those formulas will answer all the ohms law questions (T5D01 - T5D12). For power (watts) the equation is always E (voltage) times I (current) in DC circuits.

This might help you remember...draw a circle on a piece of paper and draw a line form left to right inside the circle, this divided the circler in half, top and bottom. Now, on the bottom half draw a line from the center of the horizontal line you just drew to the bottom of the circle.

You should now have a circle divided into 3 parts, the big part on top and 2 smaller parts on the bottom half. in the top write an E for volts (Electromotine force), in the bottom left section write and I for current or amps and on the bottom right section write an R for resistance or ohms.

Now you have a graphical ohm's law. the E (on top) divided by R (on bottom) = I (next to the R) and E divided by R = I, and lastly I * R = E. I hope that helps.

Also remember the test will only have 1 question from each element, which means only one ohms law question. In the next 8 days, take online tests or use the flashcard feature on some of ths sites, and concentrate on just the stuff you don't get.

Don't keep testing over and over on stuff you already know....concentrate on what you don't know.

Last thing, the QRZ tests are good, but try something else. Take a look at this Exam Practice. there you will find 5 different test sites, including QRZ, but the one I really like that really helped me was the "KB0MGA.net", towards the bottom.

On that one you can concentrate on any single element and it shows which ones you need help on through a series of detailed bar charts. The flash cards can be configured so all the questions are from the same element so you can focus on what you need to learn to pass.

Just so you know, I just recently (7/14) passed the Tech (1 question missed) and the General (4 questions missed) tests on the same night by using the flashcards and simulation testing on that KB0MGA site. I did it in 9 days, and so can you. Good luck and let us know how you do.

The QRZ exam site does allow you to test individual sections as well. :)

I'm taking my EXTRA test this Saturday. I'm definitely ready -- been passing at 90% or better the past two weeks... I still haven't scored a perfect -- usually because I don't read the question completely!

Good luck on the Tech ticket. I think I missed one shy of the maximum -- then again, I was the first person to finish any test. I did better on my General test and should do even better on my Extra as I've been studying like crazy.

Good luck on the test! Hamtestonline helped me quite a bit along with the ARRL manuals, at that time I think there was a package deal for Tech/General/Amateur Extra all for one price. Even the ARRL website has some good links to other informations. I think the ARRL links were:
Ham Radio License Manual
General Class License Manual
Extra Class License Manual
