Why do you keep calling it "Motorola TETRA"?

TETRA has multiple manufacturers on both the infrastructure and subscriber side.

Yes, it was called iDEN (or actually MIRS).

I kind of doubt that the TETRA MOU group would agree that Motorola invented it.

Nah, I don't LOOK for things to argue with you about.
You provide them without me looking!

Just having fun (and trying to keep others from getting confused)

iDEN is a proprietary system and still available, it differs from Motorola's TETRA system (though AFAIK Motorola based their TETRA development on iDEN, possibly the reason that it performs so poorly  ).

I was answering MILF'S comment about why he called TETRA "Mororola TETRA".

iDEN and TETRA are different systems, but the concepts for TETRA came directly from iDEN (TETRA would never admit this). The Standards were developed independantly (in a very European style) by the TETRA MOU group. They are technically based heavely on GSM development.

I would be interested to know what about the DIMETRA system "works so poorly", or are you refering to all of TETRA?

The concept of trunking has been around for quite a while (in analog form) and TETRA is indeed very close to GSM. Naturally manufacturers like Motorola are involved in writing the standards, so perhaps that's why it appears to be close to iDEN.

I was referring to the Dimetra(IP) system, based on the negative publicity that some of those networks have received, e.g. Airwave and more recently the CC3 network of the police in HK. (The latter may have only been published in Chinese-language media.)
At least when it comes to large(r) networks there seem to be several problems with the Dimetra(IP) networks.

The concept of merging Trunking and Cellular (low towers, not phone) technologies was developed under the Prodegy Project which created MIRS the early name for iDEN, and predates any work on TETRA.

My understanding is Motorols offered up iDEN(MIRS) and the europeans said "No Thanks".

Interesting - thanks, I didn't know that.

Well, if you want to write an open standard then basing it on the solution of a single vendor is rather foolish, wouldn't you say?

That said in Europe there is also TETRAPOL (also digital but based on FDMA) that intends to compete with TETRA. It was developed by Matra Communications and has nothing in common with TETRA - except parts of the name that is ;). As with iDEN it is a proprietery / non-standardized system, mainly promoted by EADS nowadays.

Personally I think TETRA is the better solution. Because it's an open standard it gives network operators more choice and lower prices since it's more competetive than a proprietery system were a single vendor can lock you in and demand any price he likes (not to mention that you are always at his mercy when it comes to development of new features etc.).
