The VHF system is their primary communication system, on all digital systems (AARRS,TxWARN,) or any other system their associated with it seems they almost never transmit on there

In the greater Houston/Southeast TX area, TXDPS is constantly on TxWARN and SETRRS systems, rarely hear them on VHF unless you are north of Huntsville on I45. They have a vhf channel in Freestone County, but are usually heard on the rural counties SO channels.

I was thinking along Tyler DFW Metroplex area.over toward Westherford.
They are generally out of range for me, unless a unit is far enough west to affiliate with the Kaufman County TxWARN tower, but DPS Tyler does use TxWARN.

There are several DPS related talk groups on the regional NTIRN system. Two are primarily for units on the toll roads in the DFW Metro area. Another is for the DPS Dispatch office in Mineral Wells to communicate with DPS units in Johnson County. And another is for DPS Dallas to communicate with units in this area.

DPS Mineral Wells dispatch has a talk group on the Parker County P25 system, but also are often found on their VHF channels.

The Denton County P25 system has a couple of talk groups assigned for use by DPS.

In the case of DPS in Denton County although they have their own talkgroup they mostly operate on the Denton County Patrol channels. I believe the same is true for the Johnson County units, based on Interop radio transmissions by the JOCO dispatchers. But JOCO Law Enforcement is totally encrypted.

I see a similar pattern with the Parker County units. Much of the time, you’ll hear them on Parker County talk groups, when working accidents in that county. However, I’m only ‘in range’ to hear them when I go to visit a friend in Stephens County. I cannot hear the Denton County system, nor the Johnson County site, when home in Dallas.

DPS Mineral Wells and Aledo freq are very active! Units will use the Parker County TG when they checkout at the downtown Weatherford patrol office or if investigating something in the city limits. You would miss quite a bit of DPS chatter if you only monitored the TG or the VHF side…albeit they don’t use either much! The MDT must get a workout…

So does DPS have so much programming in their portables and mobiles in their work vehicles that they hit all of these different trunking systems since Texas is so huge and still use their VHF as a main way to communicate. Seems like a lot of programming for the DPS for all of these system and trunking repeaters for the whole state. Interesting for sure.

Some people really do not know how big the topography of Texas is until they have driven it. It takes from Amarillio to San Antonio about 8 hours of full time driving all day long. Pretty wild to think of the size of this state. It's pretty cool too.

Yes, TxDPS codeplugs can be huge.

About 11 hours from Amarillo to Mcallen. North to South
OR
About 11 hours El Paso to Waskom
East to West
And there is a nice lady at DPS Austin that handles the codeplug updates.

But does it take 8 hours to drive?
Never taken that exact drive. Houston to Amarillo is around 10 hours, Houston to Ft Stockton is around 9 and Laredo to Texarkana with snow and ice on 30 east of DFW just took forever.

And to keep it somewhat on topic, Houston to DPS in Austin on Guadalupe St to Texarkana took around 8 hours.
