Some of you will remember me posting something to the effect of, "...from a dusty old list of TGs" that I was able to give a preliminary ID to a couple of TGs. In fact, that is about the time we all shifted gears to this present quest we are all on. Anyway, long story short, something made me look at that dusty old list tonight and compare it to UniTrunker dumps made by audiodave1, gldavis, and Rolfman. Each dump was from a different Site. I found this TG on all three lists with just a few (~50) hits on each one.

On my dusty old list, TG 27648 was listed only as, "UHP units heard." Several months later I monitored a conversation on that TG about an incident that I was familiar with that happened in Wyoming which identified this TG for me. This TG is Union Pacific Railroad Detectives. At the time I was more interested in police and fire activity involving government agencies so I just tucked the info away.

I will hold this TG for a few days and then if none of you can convince me that I am wrong I will submit it to the Great Father of the RR Database.

Next question: Where to put it? Shall I create a Union Pacific Railroad group and list the description as Detectives? Any other ideas? Are there likely other UPR TGs beside this one?

What do railroad detectives do BTW? Are they a private/business security group or a government oversite/emergency prevention group?

Details, details, details. All you want is details. Actually, theaton that is an excellent question. What kind of a group you could put it in is subjective I suppose. I can tell you, coming from a railroad family...my dad worked for D&RGW for 35 years...railroad detectives are very fearsome. The do have police powers, on the federal level (which means they can cross state lines) but I don't think they are federal officers. They investigate loss of freight through theft or vandalism only as it relates to railroad property and transportation of freight by the railroad. They also will arrest "vagabonds" hitching rides on the freight trains.

I don't know if they are now a part of Homeland Security because I'm pretty sure they are paid by the railroad they work for.

Why the detectives are on a trunked system here is another question since the train crews and maintenance workers all use VHF/UHF frequencies licensed to the railroads.

Don't reckon this is much help, is it?

They possibly were orphaned into the UCAN system as part of the olympics. I have no idea how active they are in this area.

Maybe not much help, qlajlu, but interesting and entertaining reading! Just goes to show you can learn something new everyday. The detectives sound more interesting than the cryptic routine train traffic (tracks, switches, yards).

And thanks to enosjones for all the new conventional frequencies in Carbon and surrounding counties--some of my favorite places on earth.

So I have never copied anything on this TG but today on my way into work, I was hearing several key ups. I wasn't able to get RIDs but that could be a sign of new radios being programed and tested. Could be a good one to monitor to see if it either becomes active or maybe gets re-assigned.

It is not very frequent, but I have heard comms on this TG directly related to the RR PD dealing with transients along the tracks. They have never directly come out and called this a RR tg on the air but I have this one in my rotation to scan and have for quite a while.
