When I have my BC246T on trunk and searching for TGIDs I have ran across some TGIDs that sound like the are encrypted. When I look up the TGID on the RadioReference Database in my area it shows beside the TGID a ( D ) under mode. Does that mean it is digital and my scanner is not tuning properly because it is only analog or is the channel truly encrypted and buying a digital scanner would be a waste of money?

The TGID is the sheriff in my town and I would love to hear it of course but don't want to buy a digital scanner (BCD396T) and can't hear it anyway.

I hope you can make since out of this.

The "D" means digital. Yes your scanner is an analog only scanner so digital will just sound like random noises sorta like fax machine sounds. That said it doesn't mean that its only digital and not encrypted too. I'd ask in the appropriate state forum to makes sure they aren't encrypted prior to buying a digital scanner.

If it's listed as D it's simply digital if it's listed as E it's encrypted.
Anything listed as D you can listen to on a digital capable scanner.
