Burn Ban

Weve had several large grass fires in pawnee county lasting all afternoon. I just noticed my neighbor burning trash, the wind must be blowing at 20 mph. Thats redneck country for you.

I'm on day 3 of my 4 day weekend off. Guess what, I've spent the last 3 afternoons (today included) fighting multiple grass fires in our area. Talk about my weekend being shot to hell because of some ignorant hillbillies.

Speaking of ignorant, the incident command post at Shawnee was closed when the burn ban was lifted and all of our extra resources were SENT HOME!!! HELLO OKLAHOMA GOVERNMENT!!! I understand lifting the burn ban. However, I don't understand sending our resources home when they should have known darn well that people were going to light up the country side as soon as the ban was lifted. Some folks screwed up when they made that decision and it's all of us, small rural fire departments included, that have to pay for the ignorance of hillbilles and paper pushers who don't work out here on the fireground.

/Rant Off

lol.... we had one West of Skiatook right before I left work work. It was really small but the BIA truck from Pawhuska showed up towards the end. Some guy was done grilling so he decided to dump the hot coals out in the weeds???!!!

EDIT: I thought I would mentioned this guy's steak ended up costing him $1,500.00 ($250 per hour per truck) plus whatever it acctually costed! :D

i wondered what the gov was thinking?? he probably wanted to boost the economy by lifting the ban so people would buy grills and charcoalers and stuff. i worked a fire tonight near lake keystone, i noticed the area the fire that had burned there last month was already green grass.....hopefully he will reinstate the ban until weve had more rain.

FYI... as of 03/27/06 - Burn Ban is back in effect for 67 Counties in OK.

Thank God. We work a small grass fire on side of hill yesterday. Nothing like other department in the area had this weekend.

There was also a huge wildfire just east of Chickasha Sunday... apparently 4 or 5 departments responded to it. Looks like it jumped SH92... and kept going. As you drive down, it's just scorched earth for a couple miles. Still smell bad, too.

I'm not real clear why exactly the burn ban was lifted... when it was put into effect back in November, the drought conditions had us 2 or so inches of precip behind norms on the year. When it started raining the previous weekend, we were 4-5 inches behind, and got 2-3, leaving us... 2 or so inches behind norms.

Of course, when the burn ban was lifted, there were controlled burns *everywhere*. When NWS/SPC set the fire weather forecast for the weekend, declaring very high fire danger for this past Sunday, I knew that we were going to have a problem.

I just wish people would use their heads and pay attention.

Where the idiots went wrong was closing the ICP at Shawnee and sending all of our help home. Real smart, lift the ban, and get rid of the help at the same time. Common sense would dictate that as soon as the ban was lifted, folks would light up the countryside.

They sent out help away when we needed it most. I think they succeded in pissing off every fire chief in the state, and from what I hear, the governers office got a call from each and every one of them.

I'm back at work today but as far as my 4 day weekend goes, I fought fires, for free (wish I got $20 per run like Drumright) all 4 days. Most of the fires were people burning and setting fires in the wrong place. One was caused by a homeowner who threw down a cigarette in her back yard. I have no idea why she'd do that. One was caused by an arsonist who threw some fireworks out of his car into a field (county sheriff is after that retard) and set it on fire. Out of all of these fires, no one lost any property. I think we did good.

Well, that's it for southern Tulsa/northern Okmulgee county. I also have to add that mutual aid was not possible this weekend because all of the neighboring departments were busy as well.

2Brav I appreciate all that you guys have been doing in this fire season. I really know very little about fire fighting and am blessed by people like you who are out risking it all for free.

Thanks freqscout. We're going on our 6th day in a row now of fighting these grass fires. I had to work at my full time job all day yesterday so I didn't do much firefighting. A structure was lost yesterday and that's kind of sad. I wish the neighbors would have called in the fire sooner than they did. They also called the fire in as a grass fire and failed to mention a structure being involved. That miscommunication ended up with the wrong type of fire truck being sent. Not the fire departments fault though.

I did go on a high speed rollover injury accident after work and the person was taken by helicopter to the hospital. There were 7 different agencies on scene when I arrived and no one could figure out how to talk to the aircraft. I found that kind of amazing. However, we were able to find a safe landing zone for the helicopter and we got traffic moving again very quickly.

Things have been quite busy. I look forward to some rain tonight or tomorrow.
