Hey all,

Thought I share some rough early pics of the future shack in my barn. I really should have started this a long time ago. I plan to add photos as it progresses, I'm no builder my father in law is the man! I'm just helping with what I can or he will let me :p. I plan on a real room, enclosed box in that former stall. 12 x 12 looks like plenty of room for my needs will lose a little adding and walls and such but will still be awesome. Working on the foundation of the floor now, Yes homemade job so maybe rough I got to keep an eye on the old man to minimize the rigging :p

I hope to make this a primo job, a simple room but with all the comforts, insulated, drywall etc. Warm in winter, cool in summer. Outside will be a small tower or mast setup. Being out of the house opens up many options for the shack and antennas. In the pics got plenty of room outside and no power lines close.

Just thought of taking pics as it was getting dark so excuse the lighting and no particular order.

Going to be a true "shack"! :) Looks like it'll be a great setup.
Good luck!

I'm seeing all those galvanized sheets on the walls and roof and thinking 'Great Ground Plane!'
What do you have in mind for antennas?

Looks like a great noise free radio location. Both from man made RFI and the wife :)

Just curious what your 3 "reserved" posts mean?
Probably so he can add updates to the top of the thread.
This is a preferred technique.
Instead of digging through a potentially lengthy thread, the whole project story is in one, easily navigated place.
Or there are others who feel compelled to make a new thread semiweekly for every inch of the way.

Except that after 2 hours from the time the original post is made, they can no longer be edited or added to.

To the OP.... looks like a great location for a very quiet shack, both for ambient noise and RF noise. I hope you are planning for some sort of a security system. Seems like a good target for theft... being remotely located away from the house etc.

I also just noticed the fridge in the first pic. Around here, it would need to warm up or the beer will freeze.

That probably didn't occur to the OP.
Or, ahem, to me.
It was a nice idea and still preferred, even if the board doesn't allow it.

Thanks all, yes I did discover I could not edit the posts later oh well worth a shot maybe admin can help or will just add them wherever in here.

Yeah not sure why paw paw :) has a fridge there will see, But already got the mini fridge/microwave combo picked out as well as small AC unit and electric heater.

Security is top priorty, I have not had any problems here, but besides a strong door, locks the room will be enclosed of coruse, Video Sur. and motion lights planned and maybe a siren to wake up the dead and everyone else if break in, the barn is not far from the house, the peace maker is always ready.

Antennas, I am on the fence on a 30' tower or a mast but my needs right now are 2 or 3 lightweight antennas HF & VHF/UHF, Im thinking a Wideband Vert, Discone and a HF Wire of some sort should cover it. At the moment Im a SWL and Scanners later on when i get lic I will consider better antenna to also TX.

Sooooooo ... is the plan to attach an antenna to a well trained horse and have them move around as needed for better reception?

If so ... that is freakin' genius!

I'm sure that you thought about closing the space between the ceiling and wall. Maybe a moisture barrier between the insulation on the floor and the ground too.
Truly am a bit jealous:)

Ha, I wish I had something awesome like that planned :p but no more horses for us. Barn is just a storage place for junk and lawn mowers thought I make use out of one of the stalls. I have no serious Ant options in my house, trees, power lines or driveway limited me and been turned off from radio because of it mostly for SWL. Now skies the limit so now only question is how high.

Well it will be basically building a box in that stall, floor, four walls and a ceiling. Will look into the barriers, the barn stays pretty dry anytime of the year but need to look all the benefits of it won't hurt, we no pro builders won't be surprised if we miss something but beats what I have now which is nothing. Will be a education for me for sure.

I would also recommend moisture barrier on the floor, at least. Especially since you will have electronic equipment in there. Just my input. Looking forward to following this thread!
