What she really did was eat the cable from the laptop to my 996XT and in the process, managed to destroy the port in the unit. So even with a new cable, my laptop can no longer communicate with my XT using Freescan or anything else. Now first, most of what I wanted programmed has already has been however I may in the future need to program something new and I seem to recall there was an electronic version of the manual for the Uniden 996XT that could be downloaded and I found that very helpful. Does anyone know where I can find that? Also, is there any other way to program the 996XT using a GPS?. At any rate it sounds like I am not only going to have to input the frequencies manually but also the TG decryptions unless there is another way. And does anyone know who will fix a 996XT? Thanks in advance

Well let's see...

a. There's no way that anything will 'decrypt' an encrypted talkgroup

b. A GPS is not used for programming - it can be used to select/deselect sites and groups without manual intervention

c. The Easier to Read manual is here (and note that you can order a printed version from Scanner Master)

Easier to Read BCD996XT Digital Scanner Manual

d. I would send the scanner to Uniden for repair (don't know of anyone locally that could do it...)

The 996XT has two ports, if only one was damaged- use the other one.

BTW, Does anyone know how to program the 996XT using Freescan via the Rear Port assuming one has the correct cables which I am pretty sure that I do. I cannot get the PC using Windows XP to communicate with the scanner. I have changed the Baud rates on the rear port (for example) but nothing I have tried seems to work.

Do you have a null modem inline between the rear port and your PC's serial port? It is necessary to have one for comms with a PC from the back port. They can be had for just a couple of bucks and really all they do is criss cross some of the connections in the serial cable. Be mindful of the genders of the rear port and the end of the serial cable when ordering/purchasing a null modem. I forgot one time and now I have a null modem with two gender changers on it:roll:

THANK YOU, I purchased a null modem from RS, plugged it in and it worked. The PC in now communicating with the scanner. I appreciate yours and everyone's help!
