Walmart and Samsung have announced a new deal that will see Walmart associates throughout thousands of stores now carry 740,000 Galaxy XCover Pro smartphones for both work uses and personal use.
In a statement, Samsung said it was the company's "largest mobile enterprise deal in the US" considering that almost half of Walmart's US store population will get a smartphone by the end of the year
.

"It will also come with a push-to-talk feature."

Hmmm, I can think of a ton of better stuff to listen to.

—or—

"Wal-Mart is taking away might rights to listen in on their radio traffic, because they may be doing something illegal and we need to have self appointed watchdog group to make sure that that mess in isle 5 -really- is cleaned up!

What will the company do when the associates use it as a personal device away from work and facilitate criminal activities, download porn, sexually harass coworkers, and do all the things that some people are inclined to do?

This will not play out well.

Rofl, it's funny you mention this, the other day I was at a Walmart in Colorado and heard zero radio traffic, no close call hits or anything. I also didn't see anyone wearing radios, this may explain why.

Same thing every other company does.

-Make the employee signs something that says they won't do it, then fire their arse when they do.
-Establish controls so they can't download apps.
-Track all text/e-mail on company account.

It's not like no employer has given their employees cell phones before. We've been doing it since about 1997.

On the flip side, you now have a way to reach your employees whenever you want, keep them on a short chain, and make them take care of the device (charing, etc.). It actually works out pretty well for the employer.

They will probably have all the employees on a short leash with those phones. You can bet they wont be paid if the wander off th reservation on their shift.

It's one thing to issue work equipment to employees, but simply firing them when things go bad [and they will go very bad when an employer tells their employees that can use that gear as personal gear when away from work - as it gives a personal exemption to use and that will obscure the legal line] will be more complicated than a page of company policy.

If Walmart puts it in a contract, that should cover it. It's my understanding that as long as it doesn't violate Title VII (race, sex, religion, etc.), it's no problem.

Not really. You are over thinking it. Lots of companies have done this and the world keeps on 'a turnin.
Again, Wally World isn't the first company to issue their staff cell phones.

Facilitate criminal activity most likely get arrested
Download porn most likely get fired
Sexually Harrass workers most likely fired and possibly sued

Walmart is not the first company to give cell phones to their employees.

They've been planning this for a while now since Moto discontinued the RDM2070d summer of 2019 if I recall. The original handhelds used had Zebra enterprise PTT just like any other enterprise handheld computer features but for some reason they never utilitzed it. I've heard of the cell phone as upgrades for the TC70 when I worked there back in 2017. Some store seemed to buy other moto digital radios as needed

Not surpisred on the phones for personal use, we never had enough handhelds to go around and you couldn't order but once a year or market approval for supplies on the budget which was NEVER. Somedays people didnt have handhelds so we couldn't even do our jobs for an hour or two or until someone went to lunch or went home
