That must be a name they have for a particular channel. Why don't you post that question in the Michigan forum, and tell them exactly what system you're hearing that on?

Obviously. That wasn't what I was asking.

sounds like the channel they hope the media won't hear.....

Thanks for the halfway intelligent posts, guys. I wasn't sure if it was some sort of universal scanner lingo or not. I've heard several different dispatchers in my area use it in different counties and I thought maybe there was a specific meaning for it like you suggested unitcharlie. W4KRR, I'll ask in the Michigan forums and see if anyone else has heard it there.

Actually I couldn't figure out what you were asking since the answer to the question was kind of self explanatory to me. (thank you Dwayne)

Some department "number" their channels CH-1, 2, 3, etc.
Some use letters: A, B, C
Some use precinct designations, i.e. Southern, Western, Central etc
Some use colors to "number" the channels, red, green, grey
And others use combinations: 2A, 3B, Green 1.

Come someone here explain to me what this means when someone says 'switch' or 'go to' the grey channel? Thanks.

Well, most colors indicate a DOT or STAR channel used by businesses. Do a google search for 'dot frequencies' for many lists. However, there is no 'gray got' or 'gray star' frequency, so I would also say that they are going to the channel they call 'gray'. Could be anything - including Cellular or NexTel.

"It means they are changing channels" is about as specific an answer as you are going to be able to get without you mentioning a specific agency and someone else happening to know their particular lingo. So, don't get ticked when you don't get a more specific answer.

I didn't get ticked. If I would have known more about what you just explained, I wouldn't have asked the question in the first place. I knew it meant to switch to another channel and I was just curious if the grey channel meant something specific. I guess I worded my question wrong. I'm pretty new to all of this, guys. If I ask a question that seems out of order in some way, please take into consideration that I haven't been a part of the hobby as long as most of you have on here and my knowledge of most all things involved on this forum is minimal.

Anyways, thanks for the info!

I guess your question should have went more like this:

I live in so and so Mich and my local PD sometime says switch to the gray channel. Does anyone here know what freq there grey channel is?

Also you may want to ask this in the Michigan forum to get even better results.

I think OmensEdge was making sure that "grey channel" wasn't some sort of police lingo. Like BOLO or ATL. If he were to post only in the Michigan Forum most of us would have never seen it and he wanted to ask EVERYBODY if "Grey Channel" meant anything in the General Scanning/Police World :D

Which Public Safety agency were you monitoring while you heard this ?

By chance, would it mean to switch to a Michigan State Police District 1 freq ?

Looks like that borders close to your Southwest Michigan locale.

Exactly. I'm surprised more people didn't pick up on it. I can understand though seeing as I sort of worded my question wrong. Still though...

I've heard it from a Kalamazoo FD dispatcher and a Kalamazoo Public Safety officer. I heard it again tonight and here's what happened. The call went out to a small fire and units responded. After everything calmed down and everything was back to normal, the dispatcher said to continue on the grey channel. I never heard anything after that and I'm pretty sure I have all the local frequencies in my area programmed in.

Hello,

Sometimes the right google search can turn up interesting stuff.
http://www.coopertwp.org/minutes/2-11-02.pdf
Alamo Township Fire and Rescue announced that they changed the secondary or "Gray channel" frequency. They did this due to unusually high usage of the former channel by another agency. Cooper needs to communicate with Alamo so due to the change in frequency Cooper Fire Department will have to reprogram all of our radios.

I could not tell if this was just Alamo Township or if agencies in the area used the same terms. It sounds to me like they color code the frequencies similar to how itinerant business frequencies have color dot codes.

This "Gray channel" may be for fireground or incident area communications. I did a quick look in the database here and there are a number of unknown fire channels for the area. It also looks like there is countrywide fire coordination. You will have to do some scanning of frequencies and just hope you are in range when they switch to the grey channel.

The database does not have infomation on Alamo Township. The FCC database has:
KNEZ573 Alamo Township
153.890 Base/Mobiles
154.430 Base/Mobiles also licensed to Cooper Township as KQH982
154.385 Base/Mobiles
