The ideal antenna?

I apologize in advance for asking a question like this, but I don't have the vast knowledge and experience that many of you do.

I am looking for an antenna I can mount on my roof or chimney, I am looking to pull in all bands, but more 800Mhz than anything else. I looked at the RatShack antennas and they suck, so can anyone give me an idea or an antenna that I should select?

The best antenna for all bands is a Discone.

The best for 800 MHz is one tuned just for 800 MHz.

If you are listening to systems in your area (a mobile or portable at your house would work) then almost any antenna should work. The cable will become critical if the run is over 50 feet (25 feet at 800 MHz).

As for brands, I have only used professional/commercial antenns, so others will have to answer what they find works best.

Discone!!! -But the Nil-Jon(base) is getting a very positive revue on this site,and on many other scanning forums.

Beginning to stir my interest.

Also,if Vhf air is of little interest,the "scantenna"works really well also.
