Does It Do Radio Ids? Can Trun The Led On With Ids Like The Psr-500???????

The PRO-106 is a RadioShack-branded PSR-500, with some mechanical changes (locations of keypad, LCD, speaker).

If the PSR-500 does it, the PRO-106 will do it.

Yes & Yes
As Don stated same features as the PSR-500

I see your in Ontario...
watch out the $499US list price would be $581 Canadian plus any customs taxes
Even assuming no US/State/city taxes that $581 + 13% customs tax is $656 ouch

Pro-96 vs. Pro-106 vs. GRE-500

So with all the excitement of the PRO-106, I decided to post my experience in even trying to find one of these guys. I live in Southern California, specifically, North Orange County. I called the RS in OC, nothing in the district, I called a RS in Corona, nothing in the district, I tried East LA, nothing, then a very nice guy in San Dimas offered to look up the entire region. (I didn't know you can do that otherwise I would have asked the first guy!) So the nearest place that has one is North San Diego, 90 miles away.

So then I get to thinking. Pro-96 vs. Pro-106 vs. GRE-500...

Go for the discounted Pro-96, because I'm just a noob...
GRE-500 for the availability and a long standing of good ratings?
Or the newest, coolest, Pro-106, and just wait for a local one. (I need to hold it first)?

In Orange County, Police and Fire run a Motorola SmartZone Type 2 Standard Mixed Digital & Analog with all Police (Primary) Encrypted (unfortunately)

Any info would help and thanks in advanced!

I have had it for one week and LOVE IT!!!!!!!! iT PERFORMS VERY WELL ON ALL SYSTEMS SO FAR!! Sound is clear, feels great in the hand and seems to have excellent digital voice decoding. Even the local edacs county system does well on the 106. The gre 500 seemed to have some hold up issues on talkgroups on both edacs and motorola systems. The audio was frequently scratchy and I had to send it back due to a loose bnc connector which in 15 years in scanning,I NEVER had to do previously?? I am thankful that radio shack put this radio out and hope they keep up on firmware updates!!!

Note the Pro-106 was just made by GRE (same "guts" different outside case and layout)...
so you might find the same issues with the BNC over time.

Or maybe they worked out the kinks.

If you dont have a lot of cash, and dont want the extra features, dont need LTR or i-calls then maybe the Pro-96 is for you. However make sure you get it at a GOOD LOW CLEARENCE PRICE...

If you have the money then go for a Pro-106 or GRE 500.
Pretty much the same thing just different layout and different case.

Note the 106 does NOT come with an ac adapter or USB cable (both can be purchased at RS).

The PRO-106 / PSR-500 are the easiest scanners I've ever programmed by hand. "PGM NEW <object type> <enter parameters>".

However, I sure wouldn't want to enter 1800+ 16-character alpha tags by hand.

Ok thanks, I am only using it for one TSYS (Oklahoma DPS) and about 90-100 TG's

And the 5 I-call Conv channels.

Pro-106 firmware updates are not campatible with the GRE PSR-500

Pro-106 firmware updates are not campatible with the GRE PSR-500

Just to be sure I contacted GRE support about firmware update
between the PSR-500 and the Pro-106 and this is what they had to say:

Thank You for contacting GRE. Even though both GRE and RS models
share same features, the
firmware will not be compatible between them. You would have to wait
for RS firmware release when available.

All RS models Warranty and Support will come from RadioShack and not
through GRE.

Thank you for your continued support for GRE Scanners.

Hmmm.... good to know about the updates. I wonder how quickly RS will have updates available after GRE releases them for the 500/600.

Correct DonS had comfirmed a while ago the updates are NOT compatible

I guess its just a question on if RS will update the SAME time as GRE (just take the GRE update and change it to RS format)...

or if the two will be completely different

You would think the updates would stay the same. Why have development for 2 products when you only need one. I would think that (hopefully) GRE would supply RS branded updates to the 'Shack folks the same time they release PSR updates. Then it would just be up to RS to post the updates on their site. I can't see RS having anything to do with the updates since they obviously had nothing to do with the development of the scanner.

I'm sure Radio Shack had some to do with the development of the 106 at least in terms of phyiscal appreance of the scanner. Now in terms of the inside's of the scanner most likely not since the 106 functions and has the same features as the 500. But anyway I would think that future Firmware updates would come out at the same time for both scanners but this is Radio Shack where talking about so anything's possible.

Don't count on it. For those that like regular updates/feature adds etc... the 500 might be the better option for you.

Well if they want there 106 to compete with the 500 they better. Otherwise they would just be shooting themselves in the foot if they didn't. And driving there potential customers over to GRE and buying the 500.

I understand what your saying but I don't know why Radio Shack would risk there sales of the 106 by not keeping up with the 500. But then again only time will tell how thing's go until the next Firmware release comes out. And see how fast Radio Shack reacts to it.
