I hope the next Home Patrol-like scanner has a better form factor for true portable (hand held) use.

id like to see a base with a remote control so when you are sitting or laying on your couch watching tv and you have the scanner across the room on a shelf and something good happens you can hold the channel or resume scanning turn on and off and manually find channels and not get up

And I'd like to see the remote have a grappling arm that could open the cooler and hand me an adult beverage, I'll pull the tab myself, have to get Some exercise.

How about a digital recorder like the one in the Icom R20.

Actually the HP-1 has a built-in digital recorder. I am using it at the moment using the HP-1E Trunking Discovery feature to log new TGs on a nearby P-25 system.

why is it the best antenna connector ever? How does it improve UHF?
every other trunking scanner uses BNC other then hp-1 and 396 use BNC.

At least if its going to be SMA make it motorola compatible SMA, then you can use motorola handheld antennas on it.

What's wrong with SMA? I requested this type of antenna adapter in a thread before the BCD396T came out and they added it! Best antenna connector ever! Especially for UHF.

That would be fine, but make it a decent quality one. Something rarely seen on a scanner, it's a place they can save a dime, and they always seem to save it. If I had a nickel for every BNC I've replaced...well, I'd have a few bucks....

Have you ever tried changing an SMA antenna mobile (especially one connected to a mobile antenna)? BNC is much faster and safer.

I will say one thing for the SMA - it allows me (more like requires me) to use an adapter, so if the female BNC ever goes bad, it's much easier to replace the connector - unscrew the bad adapter and screw on a new one. That's about the only advantage of the SMA.

That said, I'm sure they changed it for size reasons.

The design frequency response of an SMA connector is much greater than a BNC. Look at the specs,

Since the rumored new model has "HP" in its model number, i just pray to god its NOT a touch screen, and doesnt rely on a computer and internet connection to stay up to date. No touch screen, and fully front panel programmable are my 2 biggest concerns.

On top of that, my biggest request is for uniden to figure out, and fix their ctcss/dcs issues. Stop making it miss the first 1/2 second, and get rid of the horrible squelch tail. (gre was perfect with this, maybe you can buy their secret?) Also, have 1-5 seconds for delay times, not just 1, 2, and 5. Also, i have no idea what kind of memory system the new scanner will use, but i know the 396xt's ability to hold 25000 "channels" but only 500 per system is some BS

God, touch screen would be awful! I can't stand touch screens. I want to buy a smartphone, but I want one of those blackberrys with a pull out keyboard. Not to say the phone isn't touch screen, but it helps to type. I saw some Straightalk one's on Ebay. And Windows 8 is a PITA to deal with. Anything touch screen is just plain stupid in my humble opinion.

I have read through the forms and seen what others are looking for in the next uniden scanner. I am going to put my two cents worth in also.

I use to like Uniden scanners from the time my dad had purchased his for the semi. I dont remember the model but I remember it was a 16 channel scanner. Later we upgraded to a base scanner and also purchased the Uniden Bearcat 350 Beartracker. I had also purchased a Handheld that had like 100 channels I believe. I remember the audio on them scanners was like 100 times better then the one on my BCT15X. I havent played with any of the new digital ones yet cause I havent had the money to purchase one and plus at the time I didnt see a need for it. Now that my county is going to the P25 Phase 1 project I guess it is time to get one. What I would like to see in the next one and I seen a few others is one that is Mil speced. I would also like to see the handheld be Waterproof. Instead of it being a LCD screen why not upgrade to a LED screen? Everything else is going LED. Not only does LED use less power but it is much brighter. I would also like to see it cover LSB and USB but that is just a extra opion. I would also Like to see it scan the HF bands but thats my prefrence. Now I would love to see the support of D-Star like many others have quoted. D-STAR seems to be popping up around everywhere and that would be nice to montior. I havent got a D-STAR radio yet but that might also make ham operators who listen to D-STAR want to buy the radio if it is active in there area.
Now to me a touchscreen im not to crazy about. To me thats just something else that can break and stop working and will probaly cost a million to get fixed. Other then that I am pretty happy with the scanner other then the Audio. In the vehicle I have to have it at 30 and still cant really hear all the traffic.
I would also like to see it have a Micro SD or SD expansion slot. SD cards are so cheap nowdays and they keep making them bigger so theres no reason to expand the internal memory if it saves money on the product. I am all about making the product worth the money you pay for it.

Also I would like to see it beable to work as a dual band radio. Beable to lock onto one freq. and listen to the rest. I guess that goes with the dual reciever feature everyone has been talking about.

I agree on somehow speeding-up CTCSS/DCS tone searches. I HATE how it takes a few seconds to lock onto a tone. My PRO-163 can do this in scant milliseconds.

If it is a mobile make it with a detachable head out of the box and have a standard modular jack connection. Also if going sma make it a male sma so with repeated antenna or feedline changes you do not wear out the socket in the radio. Motorola got it right by puting a male sma and having the easily replacable antennas be female sma.

There are lots of great suggestions here for the next scanner. I simply want to stress the desire for MotoTRBO and other newer formats, and I would be OK with paying extra to download or activate formats that involve extra licensing costs.
