Log your catches here. It can be fun to receive distant signals using meteor scatter. My own contributions will mostly be broadcast fm radio, but who knows what I'll get.

Ham operators use meteor scatter also, but they send little digital pings which require expensive equipment. If you have trouble identifying a station, take note of the time, frequency and a description of the content, and post it here. Maybe we can help you.

The skip/distant signal thing is always something I found interesting but never actively tried. It's always been an accidental thing to pick up something. Weather permitting this weekend I think I might give it a try and see if I can get anything.

Re:

I believe it already started I saw a nice BRIGHT shooting star last night approx 1:45 am and I believe I saw one off to my left (from where I was sitting) out of the corner of my eye a few seconds earlier.

Nope, I never was into that fancy computer stuff but I racked up plenty of contacts using SSB on 6M. Burns are short but many are long enough for an exchange of callsigns, enough for a QSL card. Timing is everything when it comes to the unexpected so it takes a certain knack and a little bit of luck.

Weather has nothing to do with it, this isn't a rain shower, it's a meteor shower.

True but I was referring more towards the actual viewing of them. It's supposed to be cloudy and raining most of the week before clearing out a bit Sunday night. If it's raining or cloudy there's nothing to see. It'd also mean I'll be inside and not trying to search for any signals I'd otherwise not be able to get.

I wonder ... would a video camera be sensitive enough to pick one up under dark skies?

One could video tape the sky, and use audio from a suitable FM tuner with a low antenna tuned to a clear channel. Then as you hear the tuner come alive with the distant station, you'd see the meteor that caused it!

I don't think that's on Youtube yet. (is it?)

Supposed to be clear on Sunday night ... I'll be out taking pictures, while recording some FM at home.

Good luck everybody!

I have a Sony with

night vision, (the one and only that can be modified to see through clothing! LOL). I've used it at night viewing the moon and even through my reflector telescopy. Will try to find any tapes I still may have with those night shots. But take your camera out tonight and see if you can video capture some of the brighter stars.

I used to listen to the TV Ch. 2 and 3 analog video carriers for meteor pings.

Can't do that anymore!

Used to do that on the FM band too, but all those glory days of the 50's and 60's are long gone. Had the biggest Wineguard made atop the house, DXing on a Heathkit TV. Now too much band congestion, and so much digital noise to cope with. As I write this I'm hearing about a ping a minute on Spaceweather Radio. A couple were longer than usual.
