The Whole 800mhz Rebanding Mess...

I've been reading in the Uniden forums about the upcoming rebanding in the US and I'm wondering how ugly this is going to get. Technically we shouldn't be affected here (from what I understand)... but what about this scenario. I do a lot of travelling and of course take my scanners with me. Say I am heading to... lets say Buffalo for example, and I take my BC246T with me. Now from what I've read I will need to reflash my 246 with new firmware to handle any rebanded systems there. What happens when I come home and want to listen to local systems again? All the tables will be messed up in the scanner, meaning I would need to revert back to older firmware. Does anyone know if this is even possible? (downgrading the firmware that is). It sounds like it could be a real pain in the butt. And from what I've also read, my beloved BC780 isn't flash upgradable, so I guess it won't be travelling anywhere! Thankfully it looks like the Pro-96 can handle this on the fly via software. This would also be a big pain in the butt for folks living in border cities that are used to listening to systems in both countries. Apparently boarder cities are pretty low on the list for rebanding, but it's gonna come sometime :?

The update will add support for rebanded systems. It won't remove support for systems that have not been rebanded.

Forts, from your archival posts, I know you have quite the stable of scanners. I figured a collector like you would go out and purchase another radio to be dedicated for to the re-band plan. :lol:

hahaha...umm.. I was just posting on behalf of our other readers, yeah that's it! Actually, I've weeded some of mine out lately... I'm at 7 scanners at the moment... and sorta keeping an eye on that new Uniden 396 :wink:

Come on guys, Rebanding is in the States not here in Canada. Completely different altogether, the FCC and Industry Canada. As if I need to tell you that :wink:

Maybe in 20 yrs from now we will need to start worrying about that, at least I hope

Well as Forts said, if you live near the U.S. border and monitor stuff from
stateside, you may want to modify just so you won't lose what you are
used to listen to.
You have to agree that one of the most irritating things is when freq's
go silent after years of listening to radio traffic on them.
Also, Canadian cities near the border may also re-band sooner
than the outlying areas.
It ain't happening today or tomorrow , true but we should pay attention
in any case.
