How often do ya listen to those off the beat elusive channels programmed in (Ya mostly business stuff etc) in hopes of being able to identify the user yet in all the years listening still cannot identify the users.

This usually occurs on VHF/UHF repeaters or these new DMR systems etc...

I can tell you I've got lots programmed for multiple different frequencies tied to pl tones and talkgroups etc. Even though been scanning them for years. Cannot ID them.

Example. I have logging companies in different systems on an LTR system still in use and on VHF simplex and business repeaters. I've got a trail groomer VHF repeater that's on a business type repeater with multiple users like different contractor type companies etc...

How do ya cope with them? Lol just sit back listen to blabbering chatter until that one day that someone gives ya some sort of clue as to what it is you've been listening to for years.?

Interesting topic to bring up. the one that stands out to me is 462.5625 (that common GMRS/FRS freq) has been used for some sort of business out here in Mississauga for many years now. It must be on a repeater because I can pretty much pick it up from almost anywhere in the city. I sounds like some sort of condo/office building maybe even a retirement community? Combo of security and maintenance uses a DCS of 023. gotta do some better research in the TAFL because there are quite a few businesses that use it in Mississauga.

As for DMR, I have a couple, but they have been using the same frequency for a while with different talkgroups and different colour codes on and off for about years now. But with all the new technology and with scanners capable of DMR and better SDR dongles, i bet that will change.

I've got plenty of different channels programmed some with old tones that are likely not in use any more but some new ones still show up from time to time.

Ya know it's the part of the scanning that well no-one listens to cause it's not cops n robbers but it's still stuff to listen to.

It's funny some ya get right away and some ya don't. Atleast with the database here as long as ya have some sort of description to its use you can submit it. I'm sure we'd have lots in there if more people submitted them.

Once in a while I'll get lucky and you'll hear one of the unknowns saying "I'm just pulling into 1234 Main St" which happens to be right around the corner from where I am. After a quick detour, bingo... ID'd the user. In big cities you can't really chase them per say but if an address pops up nearby you can get lucky.

I too have a pile of unidentified users. Many of the freqs are not in TAFL. I am surprised at the number of 'unrecorded' radio systems/channels out there. For all pratical purposes TAFL is getting so limited on the freqs that its almost useless. In the past I have been able to identify some by going back 5-7 years and seeing who was assigned to that channel back then.

My usual policy is to just monitor them occasionally and like IdleMonitor hope for something useful to be said. Farms and factories are a big contributer to this list.

If I need to identify a user I have both spectum analyzers and a commercial doppler direction finder at my disposal.
