I have been trying to figure out the communications of the THP
for years. I know that here in my county (Cocke) the dispatcher
talks on 42.420 mhz to the mobiles. The Mobiles talk back on
42.260 mhz. But I knew that in order for the dispatcher
to hear them without any problem there must be a link of some
type. Mainly I think this because of my distance from Fall Branch,
the location of the dispatcher. In order for the mobile units to
transmit and be heard without difficulty, (mountainous area here),
there had to be some other frequency in use. I HAVE FOUND IT!!!
The mobile units still transmit on 42.260 mhz, but there is a
repeater on 72.020 mhz that is repeating the mobile transmitions
back to Fall Branch. The listing is in the FCC database and for years
I have thought that might be it, but until I purchased a Pro 95
scanner and was able to enter this frequency with Win95 software,
I was unable to verify this. Now I can hear both sides of the
communications taking place from the THP. Listening to 42.420
mhz and also 72.020 mhz. I hope this would help others as I have
been asked by many people concerning the one sided conversations
that most people hear.
Take care
Danny

Cool I guess I will have to program those frequencies in my scanner for when I drive through Tennessee.

You rolling East/West like I-40? Or rollin North/South? If E/W, also program all the trs's that you can pick up as you travel. Also if you happen to be heading into NC, let me know where your heading.

At the hairdresser's, past the liquor store.
In most areas of the state, THP uses relays. Most, if not all, of the UHF frequencues licensed for law enforcement in the 451, 452, 456, 457 MHz areas are for this purpose. Likewise most of the 70MHz freqs. If I'm not mistaken, some of the Hi-VHF's are used as well, like 155.505 maybe?

72.860 Sewanee/Monteagle Mountain off I-24, Exit 134

75.800 Pikeville (Heard in Monteagle)

75.880 Chattanooga (Heard in Monteagle)

The THP uses alot of frequencies in the 72-75 Mhz range.

Most of the repeaters on Monteagle Mountain are located near Sewanne.

Monteagle Mountain is the highest point in a direct line from Chicago, IL to Miami, FL at 2,100 ft.

The THP also maintains several repeaters in the Palmer area of Grundy County at the State Fire Tower.

The CSX railroad also maintains a repeater in downtown Monteagle.
***There is no railroad or train service on Monteagle Mountain. It was removed many years ago!

I've programmed all the previously-listed frequencies into my Pro96, plus all known VHF low, mid, high and UHF freqs used by THP. Yet I can still only hear half of the conversation, generally the patrol car. I never hear the reply from base. Even if I'm physically close to a THP car and use a mag mount scanner antenna, I only hear half the conversation. Any suggestions? Location is Franklin, but driving N or S on I-65 I don't hear any difference.

THP in District 3

You should hear them on the following frequencies, if you don't
I don't know what to tell you as far as advice:

42.36000 District 3 Dispatch
42.42000 District 3 Car-to-Car

I programmed my PRO-95 with all of the 72mhz frequencies using the Starrsoft software. I was visiting my father in Southeast Tennessee this weekend and I was able to copy THP dispatch on 42.420mhz and the mobiles on 72.780mhz. I'm so glad I did this because I haven't been able to listen to the mobiles in the past. Thanks for the info folks!
