Was listening Satuday night 4/16 when THP Cookeville started a pursuit of a carjacking suspect out of Knox County westbound I 40. I am able to monitor THP Cookeville here in Cleveland off the Hinch Mtn site. Troopers were unable to stop the suspect and the pursuit continued westbound with the troopers calling out exits and mile markers...I pulled out my Rand McNally atlas and tracked their movement. As the pursuit continued further westbound I figured THP Nashville would be involved which they eventually were. At mile marker 258 Gordonsville exit dispatch advised all THP Cookeville units on the pursuit to switch to "pursuit channel 1" to coordinate with THP Nashville units and with that I was left hanging on the eventual outcome.

My question: I assume dispatchers can patch different districts together on the fly to one talkgroup. Would this be one of the THP operations talkgroups (Nashville or Cookeville) or one of the systemwide law enforcement mutual aid talkgroups? I am assuming there are no dedicated pursuit talkgroups assigned on TACN as I see none in the database. And would the Cookeville units be added to affiliate with Nashville towers or Nashville units with Cookeville towers? I realize TACN has many options, I'm just wondering if anyone knows if there is a standard procedure (SOP) to accomplish this or if it is up to the dispatcher on how it is pulled together.

Thanks in advance for any info or comments!

Pursuit 1 is what we labeled OPS 1.... Pursuit 2 is OPS 2.... They most likely have more State Wide TG's than the 1 we have found so far. If they need to interop with SO/PD's then they would have everyone go to an LEMA TG if it got multi jurisdictional. I am unsure of when they hand off too another district and call off the originating district. I really can't see say, THP Cookeville chasing all the way to say, THP Memphis. It would get handed off at some point and the Cookeville units called off to go back to patrol in district.

As for Operational Procedure, Dispatch can set up any patching on the fly on their own, or at direction of the top ranking IC for the event depending on the need. There is an point at which Dispatch will have all involved flip from Dispatch1 to Pursuit TG's after say an certain number of miles as to free up Dispatch 1 for routine ops (Especially if its busy). Sometimes one of the "Post Commanders" at Dispatch will lean over and tell them which TG to have units go to. One day one of our folks will catch the patches if any on Pro96Com etc and figure it out

Thank you for your response milf....I was assuming the OPS talkgroups are used for pursuits but didn't know for sure. I agree don't think Cookeville THP would be in a chase all the way to Memphis however we do seem to live in crazy times. I did notice when the switch to the pursuit channel was made the regular Cookeville THP talkgroup filled immediately with routine radio traffic....tag registrations, traffic stops, call dispositions, etc. I know I listened to the chase for 30+ minutes and a lot of radio traffic had backed up.

Your answer is exactly what I was looking for....thanks again!
