OK people, it's that magical time of year when the Louisville airwaves come alive with the sounds (err, rather radio traffic) of Derby. First up is Thunder so let's get those frequency lists going.

Question About Louisville Public Service Frequencies

Hi ScanMan. I am returning for the 2nd time to Thunder. Went last year and now I'm hooked! Question: It appears that Louisville is using the new P-25 digital system now. Is that correct? If so, should I include any of the old VHF/UHF stuff as well? Presently, I have them in the radio, so it won't be a problem. I just want to know what to monitor.

BTW, we are coming from the Greater Cincinnati area (Covington, KY).

Thanks,

I would leave them in... there is some patching still going on... hard telling how many P25 radios will be in service... my guess this will be a full-service test for the new system.

Fire is not on the new system yet. Also do you have the new FD paging frequency?
And update the State P25 channels, a many new ones have been mapped since last year.

The police and EMS will be using the new system. I don't know which talkgroups they will be using, but there are 10 Event Talkgroups that were created for just this kind of thing, so it stands to reason that some of them are likely to be used. They are listed in the RR database section.

Police also have some tactical channels that are encrypted and might be used.

EMS also has talkgroups that are set up for details, but all of their talkgroups are encrypted.

Safest bet is to set up the MetroSafe system and use ID Search and see what you hear.

Here are the frequencies that someone posted last year for the air show:

0132.3200 AIR BOSS
0142.3500 KYARI NG
0123.1500 ARO SHELL LIMALI
0123.4250 LIMA LIMA

Thanks for all of the good information. I will keep all of the old freqs in and leave my PSR500 with a wildcard to see what pops up on new system.

Will include the Milcom stuff as well.

Here are the frequencies that I reported last year. I know that some are not valid.

132.325 Airboss (extremely activie)
123.450 Banner carrying aircraft
123.575 Lima-Lima Air to Air frequency
376.025 Raptor Control (F-22)
45.75 Apache Helicopters (CT showed 151.9)
347.50 Chinook Helicopters
165.9625 Unknown mentioned "Command Post"
149.825 Clear and encrypted P-25 (KYANG?)
149.750 P-25 seemed to be "Traffic Control" (I think these were the
guys that assisted police with directing traffic, but I could be wrong)
157.10 River Traffic Law Enforcement and Coast Guard
157.15 Similar to above

You can leave 376.025 in there. The F-22 won't be there but the F-15E demo will and they use that same freq. Also the F-16 demo is coming too so they'll more than likely be on 384.55

Do you guys that are interested in scanning have a particular 2-meter repeater or any other means of communicating to one another during the show? I had a fellow ham coming with me, but he has family issues that will prevent this. It looks like me and my twelve year old daughter again. She is not much help with my radio issues;-)

Two quotes from the Louisville Courier-Journal that will provide other monitoring opportunities.

“Along with the Coast Guard, representatives from the Louisville Metro Police dive team and river patrol, Louisville Fire & Rescue, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, Harrods Creek Fire & Rescue and the Kentucky Division of Fish & Wildlife gathered Wednesday morning at the Louisville police River Patrol docks off of River Road to showcase several boats that will be on the water Saturday.”

“Conservation Officer Ed Mahurin said Fish & Wildlife will have five boats on the water Saturday, including his 27-foot Boston Whaler Challenger that is assigned to Jefferson County, which was on display Wednesday morning. Other Fish & Wildlife boats from Oldham County, Taylorsville Lake and Meade County will join the patrol efforts, Mahurin said.”

Brock Persons KK4CZ has a repeater located in downtown by the waterfront that covers almost all of Louisville, I'll email him and ask If he would allow an informal Thunder net. If he says yes I'll post the freq.

I just heard "demo 1" on 327.000. Didn't get to see what it was, but it was definitely some kind of fast mover from the sound over my house in Jeffersonville.

If all else fails we could probably pick a good simplex frequency and use that. I hate the fact that when I go to most events, I spend so much time looking for frequencies but don't find them until it's too late. I would love to be able to share my finds and those of others in real time, so we can all listen as it happens.

I am looking forward to TOL and will keeping checking this forum to see how things turn out. Thanks for looking into the use of this repeater.

Let the fun begin.
According to bowman tower, an F-15 was out over the river, in the Box, practicing for thunder.
I picked up some traffic on 376.025 about the same time. Still no verification on the airboss freq.
This happened about an hour ago.

For those not going to Thunder (I am! :D) and for those who do not recieve certain things clearly or for what ever reason, LiveATC.net has ported the AirBoss freqs to their online streaming services... you can find them here: LiveATC.net - Thunder Over Louisville Also, I suppose it should be noted that LMPD does have online scanners, but they have been up and down since the switch to MetroSafe and the P25 system. It can be found HERE.
