Thurston County is going p25
In November 2017, the TCOMM 911 Administration Board of Directors resolved to replace the current VHF analog radio system with a 700 MHz digital system. The current system was purchased in 1978 with an upgrade in 2008.

The public safety radio system replacement project is a total system replacement of the current VHF analog network to a 700 MHz, P25, phase 2, simulcast system with maintaining a VHF overlay for station notification systems and interoperable communications with neighboring counties. Research and studies that pointed to system replacement also showed cost and cooperative benefit in partnerships with State and regional systems – Washington State Patrol (WSP) which owns and operates a digital radio network would have the best opportunity to share resources and provide a partnering agreement for mutual benefit.

The Board directed the Executive Director to secure funding for the $30M project and to pursue a partnership with WSP to share resources, specifically the system core.

Funding for the public safety radio system replacement project will be provided by a percentage of County-wide sales tax.
