tips for monitoring city of saskatoon.

i have recently had the good fortune to purchase my first home.the only problem is that i am now approx 45 km out of the city.as of yet i still havent had the chance to erect any type of antenna system but was wondering if there is anyone else that lives a comparable distance from stoon and still monitors the citys trunked system.if so what type of antenna system are you using with what type of results.in the past i have been using a discone style antenna with great results but am now wondering if a directional might might be a better choice for monitoring the city and use the discone for everything else.antenna height is not an issue because now i can erect a tower .any info would be greatly appreciated.

Well first off welcome to the forums! and secondly congrats on your first home.

45 km is nothing. A discone up in the air will be just fine, unless your in a valley or something.

Down here in Regina I can easily get the city Motorola type II ASTRO system 30km away at ground level with a BNC telescopic.

Agreed. I would try the discone first and see what results you get. I would put it up on a reasonably sized mast on top of your roof. For example, a 5 foot or 8 foot mast mounted to a brick chimney, or a roof tripod mount with guy wires to the roof edges. You might be happy with that setup.

If that's not sufficient, you can then upgrade to an 800 MHz yagi pointed at Saskatoon for the trunked system, and the discone for everything else.

If that's not sufficient, then you can talk about a taller tower. But, my gut feel is the simple solutions will work for you, without a need for a tower.

The key here is to start off simple, with the discone. That might just do the trick for you.
