Hey guys,
I'm in Tipton Co., TN and I just started listening about two weeks ago. One particular issue i've run into is that for certain freqs and agencies I can only hear one side of the conversation. For the local Air Wing, I can hear the dispatch, but I don't hear the chopper talking back to dispatch. I have used radio reference web service and Win97 to program the scanner, which is a RS Pro-164.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
-J

Sorry, thought it was general enough of a problem that freqs weren't necessary. It happens on the following:

154.75500 156.01500 RM 100.0 PL Memphis Memphis Shelby County FM
154.77000 KA2856 M 131.8 PL THP Air Ops Air Operations FM Law Tac
155.28000 KNHY227 BM 156.7 PL Dispatch, Flight Following FM
463.15000 468.15000 KNHY227 BM 151.4 PL Dispatch, Flight Following FM
155.34000 KNHY227 M Ground-to-Air HEAR FM
155.20500 KNHY227 M Ground-to-Air State EMS FM

Air Wing

Well, you have some I have never heard them on. I imagine, if you aren't hearing the helo, it is because it is too far away and/or too low. The base station would typically be on a high site, high power. The helo could be anywhere and a long way away from your receiver.

I can generally hear the helo if they are in Shelby County but when they get beyond that, it just depends. My antenna is about 90' in the air. I don't use any PL codes in my radio so I can't tell you if you have the right ones or not. Obviously, the wrong one will keep you from hearing the helo if they are encoded.

Are you using an outside antenna or just one on the radio in the house?????

I hope this helps a little.

To Clarify

I hear both sides of the traffic on these freqs if the helo is in range:

155.28000 KNHY227 BM 156.7 PL Dispatch, Flight Following FM
463.15000 468.15000 KNHY227 BM 151.4 PL Dispatch, Flight Following FM
155.34000 KNHY227 M Ground-to-Air HEAR FM
155.20500 KNHY227 M Ground-to-Air State EMS FM

I have not monitored the other freqs that you provided.

Thanks Gatorman, I think that is the probable culprit, i.e., helo out of range. I am using the rubber ducky that comes w/ the Pro-164.

Repeater Systems

The Med Com UHF frequencies are NOT repeated. They transmit on one and listen on another. You will hear the helo on 468.15 but the signal is not repeated through 463.15.

Over time (within a few months) you will start hearing less on 155.205. MedCom and EMA are converting this channel to a dedicated channel for emergency management. Mainly for coordinating EMS units to the scene of a MCI. The reason you are hearing one side of the conversation is because none of these channels are repeated. The Helo's are supposed to be using 155.280 but non-locally based services obviously didn't get the memo because there is still heavy air traffic on 155.340 at times. All EMS to Hospital communications are moving to 155.340. MedCom should be moving to the new center shortly which will facilitate the reassignment of channel use. Once the use plan is implemented the frequencies will be used like this...........

155.205.....EMS Emergency management, Coordination of regional EMS consultant (radio id: EMS4) and incident commander to manage resources.

155.340.....All ground ambulance to ER communications and scene flight communication with the EMS units on the ground to coordinate landing and patient information.

155.280......Coordination of all medical air traffic coming in or around Memphis.
