• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I'm looking to purchase a commercial HT to monitor VHF analog frequencies.

Would the TK-2180 be a good choice? My criteria is good value for the money, receive capability, and ease of programming.

Thanks in advance!

The 2180 isn't a good choice. The 2180 is a great choice.
I have entire frequency pools programmed into different zones and being able to change the squelch tones from the front panel is very useful. The receive is the best of any radio I've owned and that all makes it great for receiving.

Thanks for your reply.

I travel from the SF Bay Area to Redding on a regular basis. So with zones I could create a zone for at home, a zone for everything between home and Redding, and a zone for Redding. Is that correct?

Any recommendations on where to purchase?

Sure! I programmed the entire ham band amongst others in separate zones. I set the top knob to change zones and the two buttons on the upper right side change channels. By the way, I highly recommend full keypad. Without it you won't have enough buttons to do stuff.

I bought mine (plural) from Vincent communications in California. Vincentcom.com

Ok that sounds like it could come in handy. I'm guessing that's going to cost extra though!

I bought my x180s back in 2006 and I have yet to find a radio in the same class that I'd rather have ten years later. I don't have the tfs either.

We are in the same boat have a fleet of about 130 radios. for the price it really cant be beat.

Vincent Communications

So I gave Vincent Communications a call and spoke to Scott. Nice guy, very knowledgeable. Pricing is reasonable. Only 80.00 for the TFS, and 50.00 for a full keypad. I see a 2180 in my near future!

Thanks for recommending them.
