To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Hi everyone, First post for me so I apologize if I've posted into the wrong place. I did try to search but found nothing.
So I recently purchased another TK-7180K which refuses to be read or write to using KPG92D or KPG89D.
I thought the KPG auto detected the model and as long as it's correct KPG it will read but I keep getting the error "Check Model Name and Market Code.
I have to assume that someone has updated the radio with the wrong model firmware.

Can anyone suggest how I check the firmware version or find out what model it thinks it is.

Thank you for any help it's greatly appreciated.

Hiding in a coffee shop.
The activation codes for the KPG software will dictate the market code the radios will talk to.

So, if your software is set up for Australian market radios, and you try to talk to a US market radio, then it's going to throw the "Check Model Name and Market Code." error.

Woolworths doesn't mean much on it's own, that just means at some point someone programmed the power on text to say that. Could have FS/FS firmware in it.

The software will handle picking the right model number radio on it's own, -IF- it can talk to the radio. If it can't talk to the radio, it's going to do what you are seeing. It's probably firmware/market code issue. Always a risk buying used radios….

You can press and hold the A or B button, while you pres the power button,
to see the firmware version, that will give a slight clue
*I forgot which on the x180 series. 1 will put it into firmware program, the other will tell it's version.
If it has passport you will need to the SJC-100 software to read it.

Thank you all for your suggestions and comments, these put me onto the correct research path.
The radio did in fact have some sort of passport firmware installed.
The power up whilst pressing A or B key failed to give any useful info as it would seem it had been blocked by the passport settings.
Press S & power did in fact put it into firmware programing mode so I followed the instructions on Changing the Kenwood TK-7180/8180 from Passport Trunking to Conventional Firmware using KPG-92D.

Problem solved I can now read & write from/to the radio without any issue.

Again thank you all for your assistance. With a big smile.
