TK-730 Woes

Just received my first TK-730 (full-featured remote head) from ebay today.

I've got it benched and everything seems to be fine, I can program it, etc., but I can't get any audio out of it. I have the speaker connected to the six pin connector in the back of the control head. I've attached the ground on each end of the control head cable, thinking that might have something to do with it.

I've found a program option for speaker selection, but that doesn't seem to do anything for me either.

This unit was supposed to have been surplus, removed from service, and it does appear to be the case. Everything is extremely clean and all of it is Kenwood OEM equipment, including the external speaker.

Are their any quirky things about this series radio when it comes to audio?

A little further investigation.... I decided to ohm out the speaker leads from the six prong connect that goes into the control head to the inside of the speaker. I found a dead short. After fixing that, I have VERY low audio. Holding the speaker up to my ear, I can head beeps from the radio and squelch noise on certain channels.

The Kenwood speaker that was included is a 4ohm 10 watt, 20 watt max speaker. No specific Kenwood number on the housing.

I pulled the speaker from my Syntor, but its 8ohm.

Any ideas what I'm looking at? Is this thing majorly screwed or am I looking at a potential easy fix?

Do you have the loopback plug on the drawer unit?

I'm assuming that you mean the 15-pin connector on the drawer? If so, then no. I it did not come with any sort of loop back. Can you tell me what pin(s) are connected on that connector so I can test? Then I guess it'll be a matter of tracking down the appropriate connector and making my own, unless I can find one somewhere.

Solution: Jumping pins 9 and 12 on the 15-pin connector on the back of the radio looped the audio back to the control head.
