To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Is it possible to disable or override the Ignition Sense feature of the TK-790? I'm using it to broadcast radio traffic and have the power mounted directly to a PC power supply. Works like a champ, but turns itself off every 4 hours. I'm trying to figure out if I can disable the "Timed Power OFF" feature, and am assuming it's tied to the Ignition Sense. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Do you have the software an dcable for the radio? In the program under edit>optional features go to
features 1 and down the list it will have timed power off. make your change then write to the radio.

You can set it off or in one hour sets up to 8 hours.

Tk 790

I bought a Kenwood TK 790 on ebay, very clean radio. I use it for a back up radio
as I sub contract to Cal Fire on large fires. This radio will not power up.
The seller said no problem will take it back. He did say another buyer
had the same problem and it had to do with the ignition source or ignition sense.
When I turn the radio on I get nothing I do have the program software and cable,
have programmed other radios too. Anybody.

If it is set up for ignition sense, in addition to the main red/black power cable you'll need to supply +12vdc to pin one of the white multi-pin connector on either the back of the control head or the rear of the radio (fused at 3A). Radio will not power up without it.

Same Issue with Kenwood TK-790

John,

I bought a radio and have the similar problem. Is there a chance you can post your documents to be able to turn the radio on. I appreciated.

Thanks,
Eddie

EddieTech: Here is the document i wrote about it. It has all the info you should need:

Radio
One side of the audio amp shows up at the rear acc connector. A wire jumper turns it around and ships it back to the control head plug. This gives you the choice of hooking the speaker to the head or the chassis.

Look at the back of the radio (antenna on the right, power cable on the left). The 9 pin connector goes like this:
Right column top to bottom, pins 1, 2, 3 (next to the indents).
Middle column top to bottom, pins 4, 5, 6
Left column top to bottom, pins 7, 8, 9
Pin1 Is the IGN Sense. This (or the control head pin 1) MUST be connected to a + for the radio to turn on.

Place a jumper from pin 3 to pin 6 for speaker wires at the control head.
For a speaker from the back of the radio, remove jumper and connect speaker wires to pin 2 and pin 6.

Control Head:
Looking at control head from back (white connector on right) pin1 is the top left and its like
1 -2 -3
4 -5 -6
7 -8 -9
Pin 1 on the control head can also be used for IGN Sense.
