TK-840 Questions.

Hi,

This is my first Kenwood, so please bare with me. I stated programming it up today. And after I programmed a few channels. I have a few questions.

1. Is fleetsync a software or hardware option? I could not find any place to disable it in software. I assume I have to go find the chip and remove it?
2. Is there a power setting? Or is it always on high power?
3. Is there any sort of emergency mode? Every 10 or so key-ups the mic stays open, and you have to key again to stop transmitting. I'm not sure if that's a feature, or me buying a third party mic which is stuck open.

Answers to your questions (to the best of my knowledge):

1. The TK-840 didn't offer Fleetsync as an option. If your TK840 has Fleetsync, it is an add on (a board plugged into the main board from Midians, for example), so it would be a hardware option at this point.

2. Power setting is done in Test Mode within the software or front panel tuning. It is adjustable, not sure to how low though, never tried it. The rated transmit power is 25 Watts with a duty cycle of 20%.

3. You have something going on somewhere, maybe a flaky microphone. Do you have access to another microphone? I would try a different microphone before anything else. It might be tied in with your first question about the Fleetsync; the board may be malfunctioning, if installed.

Best thing I could recommend, if you are careful, is to remove the two screws and see what is under the cover. The KDD-4, if mounted properly, should be mounted behind the faceplate (according to my service manual). The Fleetsync board may be mounted here as well. You need to remove the control panel to see if the KDD-4 or if anything else is installed behind it.

Once set up, the TK-840's are a great radio for Ham and GMRS use. I have a couple among my hoard of radios here.

Ok. I finally had a chance to open the radio. Is this an external fleetsync board? A search for the esn came up with nothing. It is in the main unit, not the head.

Could very well be an ani board.
