To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I have successfully programmed my TK270G using KPG-56D v3.2 and a pure DOS laptop.

I could use the software to accurately align the squelch threshold levels and front end but I will need to build an adapter to enable an external audio output/speaker. When you plug in the programming cable it disables the internal speaker.

However, the TK270G is capable of being aligned and programmed using the front keys so you can still use the internal speaker.

I have read the service manual instructions and basically know how to use the front keys for aligning BUT there is one area I am not sure about...basically using the [0] key to "adjust 5 or 3 point tuning"...what does this mean? All the other keys are clear....[>] to select adjustment item, tuning knob to change values, [<] key to write new value etc...but what is the 5 or 3 point tuning all about? I'm guessing that it toggles thru, say, low, medium, high values once you use the [>] key to select the relevant item to adjust?? But I want to get some guidance before I start !!

Hope someone can help who has used the keypad to align a TK270G before.

Thanks

You say you have the service manual, towards the back is a pin out of the external connector.

You can then go into the connecter and solder two wires for a speaker jack and two wires for mic audio that if you are aligning using a service monitor, (you should be), then you have all connections.

Why do you not use the computer for the alignment, soooo much easier.

I took a speaker mic for a 290 and opened the connecter, took the program cable removed the radio connecter and transfered the wiring to the speaker/mic connecter, then I drilled a hole in the top of the mic for a 2.5mm jack and now I have a full service/program interface.

Beening using it for over fours and I can do all Kenwoods with the same connecter.

Total cost about $140.00, (the program cable was the most).

I was thinking of just using a couple of 2.5mm and 3.5mm plugs and inline sockets..so I don't need to cut up the prog cable..but the service manual is very biased towards using the front keys for alignment.

Most of the instructions are based around using the front keys. In fact, there is not enough guidance on using a PC for alignment..buts its obvious when you start to use the software.

However, I want to experiment with using the front keypad..I will only be doing it as a one off rather than on a regular basis so I don't mind the challenge!!

Any idea about the [0] key (note the 0 is the black filled in key) which is used to adjust the "5 or 3 point tuning". I'm thinking that it is used to "lock on" to a selected item after you use the [>] key to toggle thru the options..so you toggle [>] to get to the item, then press [0] which locks onto the selected item, then continue to use [>} to toggle thru Low/Center/High paras, then press [<] to save new values??

Any ideas?
