• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I have a tk790 and I programmed it myself. im trying to figure eout what the problem is. it seems like im receiving another town on my fire freq. im using it mostly for listening while responding so I disconnected the mic from the mic cable. I enabled off hook scan. do I need to check off hook decode as well? if what im reading is correct then without the mic connected it disables the pl. any input here?

Sounds like it.

It's pretty common for radios like this to be set up this way. The PL/CTCSS decode is defeated when the mic is off the hook, this forces radio users to "monitor" the frequency when they take the microphone off the hook. This prevents interfering with other users on the same frequency. The mic hook circuit uses the button on the back of the microphone and the metal clip. By disconnecting the microphone from the radio, you've made it think the mic is off the hook.

The programming software will let you change this. Off Hook Decode is what you want. Either that, or just reconnect the microphone.

Are you saying there's a button that senses when the mic is out of the mic holder? And if so wouldn't I need to have the mic in a holder for it to see it as "on hook" I'm a bit of a novice when it comes to programming.

Also it likes to beep randomly while scanning. And not all the time. Only sometimes. I don't understand why

Yep, sort of. The metal of the mic clip completes a circuit that tells the radio if the mic is off hook or not.

Could be "priority scan" is set. They can be set up to beep when the priority channel has traffic.
