To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Hello, is there a specific way to update the firmware on a dual band (TK-790H & TK-890H) setup. I have updated the firmware on single band radios, but I can't seem to update the dual band. I tried updating the firmware and it appears that radio one updated but radio two did not. Do you have to do them separately? If so I cannot power up the second radio independently of the first radio. My initial thoughts are to put the jumpers back to their original positions but I wanted to know if that was viable before I attempt that. Any thoughts or insight to this issue will be greatly appreciated. Thank you! mpsabre.

It should update both at the same time. You should be able to connect to the control head, run the file and both RF decks should get updated.

Are you sure radio 2 didn't get updated?

That's what I thought so I tried the update with both decks connected. Well I'm not sure if the second radio updated. Before updating I was able to write to the radios without any issues, but after updating I would receive an error during the write. So I assumed that the second radio did not update.
When the firmware finished the control head did display the correct checksum. So I decided to separate the decks and removed the covers of the second radio, I moved the chip resistors back to the single unit configuration and I was able to update the firmware. Re-positioned the chip resistors and connect the two decks. I was able to write to the radios without issue. Thank you for your response. mpsabre.

Odd it didn't work out. The tech bulletin I have is several years old, so maybe something changed along the way.
I'm not running any TK-x90's anymore, so I'm probably a bit rusty.
