I recently received a Kenwood TM-D710A radio. I am interested in setting up as a APRS unit. I am a commercial guy (I work for a Kenwood LMR dealer) going into HAM equipment, so I get lost easily with some of this stuff.

I have been reading and trying to understand. Am I correct that if I buy a GTRANS Kenwood to NUVI cable and buy a Garmin 350, that will provide the GPS signal and show other APRS units? That will be all that I need to do this?

I was looking at putting an external antenna and running it to this, but it seems like for roughly the same I can buy the cable and 350 and do the same and get more features.

Making sure I'm thinking correctly and hooking it up correctly.

Thank you.
Jordan.

That is correct. I used a 350, the GTRANS cable, and the Kenwood 710 for about 6 months. I didn't really use the map on the GPS to see other stations. I found it cumbersome to use for that. The 'radar' display on the radio itself was fine. Plus, if I wanted to see other APRS users on a map, I just used my smartphone and looked at aprs.fi
Having to power the GPS and have an additional cable running to the Kenwood got to be a pain in the butt, so I went with the Greenlight Labs GPS and never looked back.
