so i have a guy in the area asking for some electrical work and hes offering a kenwood v7a and a comet ssb2 nmo antenna as a barter for the work. He said its in pretty good condition. Is this a good dual band radio?

It is a good dual-band ham radio but a little long in the tooth. One well-known issue they had was pixels would start to form on the "cool blue" display. Eventually the display became unuseable. Kenwood had a sort of recall on them which involved replacing the display. However, they would only do it if you were the original owner.

You should ask the guy he ever had any issues with the display and if so was it replaced. You should see the radio powered up to be sure.

Other than that it's a fine radio. Does cross-band repeat, has alpha tags and can be remote mounted.

From a function perspective I am pretty happy with mine. With that said I found the display to not be very rugged. The pixels are fine but mine is now missing a power button and two knobs. It will be relegated to packet duty soon.

I've had mine for 7 years and it works great. It's on 24/7 and has not had any display problems. I believe the early versions had the display problems. They fixed the issue with the newest ones.

I've had mine for several years now and it works great. I have never had any issues with the display nor the microphone. It has a great blue color display but in direct sunlight it sometimes gets hard to read. If there are no known problems with the model in question, I say go for it. It has been a fine radio to me.
