I’m from Georgia and I’m about to be traveling all over Tennessee a few times a year for work. When I travel, I basically connect the scanner to the radio speakers and that’s my entertainment for the entire trip.

From what I’ve been able to find online and on here, it looks like the only places it is unlawful to use a scanner in TN is in Chattanooga and Nashville. Is that correct? I've looked up the ordinances for both of these and I am fine with not listening when I’m in those areas. Are there more areas that it is unlawful to listen in? I am mainly asking incase something has changed recently in an area that I dont know about from my research.

Thanks in advance.

Are you an FCC-licensed amateur radio operator?

From what I know since I have moved from Tennessee in 2018. To use it in Chattanooga you have to have a permit from the city. I would suggest to look up the actual statue, Just google is it legal to have a police scanner in Tennessee or in a vehicle. I know here in KY you could face jail time and fines for not having proper authorization when it comes to scanners in vehicles.

Thanks. I Googled exactly that earlier and put the search on the last year and all I could find is ordinances in Chattanooga & Nashville. I’ll also be traveling in Kentucky as often as Tennessee. I’ll have to Google that state as well. I’m fine with unplugging it and placing it under the seat when I’m in a location where they are not allowed or where a permit is required.

In Kentucky it is unlawful to possess a radio or scanner capable of receiving or transmitting on public safety frequencies unless your a member of Emergency management, police, fire, etc. If your a ham radio Operator your allowed to have it in Kentucky
