And you thought they were for your navigation needs.
What you may not have known is TomTom also tracks your information and in turn sells it to the world wide governments & police. Although it can help in determining infrastructure needs it is also being used to determine where to set-up speed traps & police photo cameras.
You buy the unit to assist you in your personal navigation needs & they track your usage & sell the info.

Rules and Laws in Foreign Countries vary and are not as Strict as those in North America

When did a GPS receiver become a data transmitter? Have I missed something?

When you connect the TomTom to the computer for updating it sends all the info via the internet to them.

It was only the "Live" models that provide traffic data and can receive that same data.

Solutions:
  1. Don't speed
  2. Use a radar detector
  3. Don't use/buy a TomTom (or at least a "Live" model)

Police use sat-nav data to place speed cameras | Deep Tech - CNET News

I hate how people hear the snipit before the commercial on the news and don't listen to the whole story, the news reporters make stupid judgmental uneducated comments after/before a news article, and/or the news article leaves out important facts like SPECIFIC MODELS, and finally people that spread rumors about something they "heard" about which was actually from someone else that only had 1/2 the facts so the person you heard it from only got a fraction of the facts which were wrong in the first place because of the news "source" was wrong too.

Where you going?

If this sort of thing worries you, quit on-line directions. If you put a point of interest, such as an amusement park, or resort of whatever, as your destination, they sell the starting address to people who are in the same business.
