Tone Isolaters

Hey everyone, i'm a voluteer firefighter cadet in Carson City, and a proud owner of a BC780xlt. Due to the lack of paggers for us i have been using my scanner as my pagger at home. I was wondering about tone (PL,CTCSS) Isolaters, like they use in the fire stations, so only the station being tonned out hears the page? Is there a way i can do that with my 780?

Tone Decoder

Hi there,

You can get small 2 tone decoder boards from Communication Specialists (comm spec) or Selectone. The decoder will have to be setup for your stations tones. This can be wired up the the speaker jack on your scanner and can keep the speaker muted until you get a call. Most decoders have a momentary output that will activate an alarm.

OR

You can get an older pager pretty cheap at a radio swap or online. You will have to have the proper crystal isntalled inthe pager along with the right tone reeds to function with your station tones. Maybe your county comm shop will do this for you if you bring them in the unit. I see pagers go for 5 bucks at swap meets, and the old Plectron units being given away by the pallet.

I have a Motorola Minitor pager with charger/ampified speaker and have around 10 bucks into the package.

Ha - my motorola minitor III pager was free, however i did have to buy my radio. I have a RELM RPV599APLUS VHF radio that i got off falconwireless.com for about $250. It's a VHF that covers the ham bands up to the 170MHz range. It also decodes DTMF tones alont with regular VFD pager tones (such as the ones NDF uses or Reno uses if you listen to TM Main in washoe county. If you can find a radio that does that, then you may want to invest, especially if you plan on getting your HAM radio operaters license like i am. It is kind of pricy, but an investment that has paid off for me.
