These are CTCSS/DCS tones. You don't need to enter them if you don't want to. If your scanner has the option to do so, you can enter them into the radio to prevent interference from other agencies operating on the same frequency. They let you listen to only the agency you want, and blocks out any other agency on the same frequency. See your manual to see it your scanner supports CTCSS/DCS codes.

If you're using a BCT 8 it doesn't matter because the scanner doesn't have tone capabilities.

Yes I'm using a BCT8, I guess I don't have to worry about it then. Thanks.

Out of curiosity, are there any Uniden scanners that support tones?

I'm not very familar with the Uniden models, but know for a fact the BCD396T, 996T, and BCT15 support tones.
